I've got some. So far I've only used it on plastic bumper fillers for my Regal. I like it a lot. SPI is a really great company!

Re: Anyone used spi clear how is it

Here's a pic I had on my phone. 3 coats clear. Keep in mind this is the first thing I've ever painted. In my driveway. SPI stuff made me look pretty good.

I just shot my truck with DuPont Nason paint and
Nason multi panel clear.
Great results. Very easy to work with.

Southern Polyurethanes makes some of the best clears, epoxies and sealers going IMO. Top-notch tech support which you probably won't need if you read "The Perfect Paint Job" on their web site. There is also some good information on how to adjust a spray gun.

Ditto, been using Barry's stuff for years and don't plan on switching anytime soon.

Re: Anyone used spi clear how is it

I use for the first time last year, did an all over on my sons 90 chevy 4x4. I called and spoke at length to Barry....super nice guy, very informative and helpful, even gave me gun settings for my Iwata gun. You can purchase direct if there isn't a jobber in your area, I purchased from my local distributor. My distributor didn't have the super slow activator in stock for the 95 degree temp I was spraying in, so I used the slow. Since the temp was so high, I had a hard time wetting the surface properly without excessive build ups, so I had some solvent pops on the flat surfaces.....not the clears fault, my fault for not postponing spraying for cooler temps, or getting the super slow activator. I used the "production clear" to save some $$ and it was very hard to sand and buff. The universal is supposed to be easier to sand and buff but is a bit more $$. It still turned out very well and my son is driving with a smile on his face and gets many compliments. a year later, still looks very good.

I have since done some panel paints and with the SPI production clear with excellent results. As with any paint product, following recommendations and settings for spraying is key.

Re: Anyone used spi clear how is it

I did a 69 Chevelle SS resto and a Factory Five Cobra using SPI products, both are fantastic. I used Universal Clear on both, very nice for cut and buff. I have also used SPI Euro clear on my race car and am very happy with it. SPI clears compare very well to the best products out there for a fraction of the cost. As others have said, read "The Perfect Paint Job" on the SPI site.

I used SPI clear & Epoxy. Both great products. Barry is a very nice man to talk to also.

Re: Anyone used spi clear how is it

Im using their primers, clears, and solvents on my project. Ive used them in the past and had good luck with them, although I dont have a ton of experience. But not having a ton of experience is not as big of an issue with SPI as you can get reliable help at the drop of a hat.

I have never painted anything with a gun before. Is SPI product good for a paint virgin?

I feel that a beginning painter would have good success and feel proud of the results using SPI. You will need to know the basics of gun set up, what each adjustment does and how it effects paint pattern. Read the tech sheet for whatever you are spraying. You need to follow the recommendation for tip size and psi settings, and if you have a question, ask it, don't just assume. Use a ratio cup for mixing...don't just eyeball it. Respect the temp and humidity and match the reducer and activator accordingly. Allow enough flash time, don't be in a hurry. I typically use 5 or 10% reducer in the mix to allow the paint to flow and lay flatter, however be careful about over saturation as runs will occur at this reduction very easy.

Re: Anyone used spi clear how is it

Oh, and spray some paint...do some tests on scrap to get a feel for it, figure the overlap needed for the desired job. Make a plan on how to paint the project, where to start and stop, practice the moves for muscle dexterity and memory.

YES! See my pic I posted above. That was the first thing I had ever sprayed clear on. The epoxy I sprayed as a base was beautiful as well.
