'74 C10 door assembly order?

Took apart my doors and painted them. Getting around to assembling them now and was wondering what order I should assemble the door in to make it easiest/possible.

I found A few vids and a nice write up for the 72's just not sure how much applies to ours. Search specific to our years found nothing so I thought I'd ask.

Here is a link to the '72 site write up.

Re: '74 C10 door assembly order?

Okay here is what I learned.

I say start with Latch and handles, then glass and moulding. the stuff I see doesn't talk about the outside door handle and it sucks.

The guy from the Brothers vid shows latch first and windows next but doesn't talk about the door handle in that vid. He has another vid showing remove install of the door handle and the door he is working with has no glass. He mentions with glass in is doable but...

The most valuable part of the video is about the friggin latch side rod clip for the door handle, it's in an incredibly crappy spot. Getting that rod back on without seeing where the groove on the rod is in relation to the clip is hard on a good day.

If the glass is in you lose top side visibility making the job doable but un-nessisarily harder since my glass is out. I know the vent glass gets a little tighter but that doesn't require the finger finagling the rod clip does.

Re: '74 C10 door assembly order?

I have worked on and built several of these doors in the past.

With the rising attention to the Square Body truck,
This is something that I am sure that some of us (Members) could put together some type of Instructions.

I have 2 doors to build on my Nephews 83 Chevy.

It could be a little while before that happens though,
Because of the Holidays.

Re: '74 C10 door assembly order?

Hopefully the end of this thread the basic load order will be defined and some of the tricky bits called out…

Vent window before side glass… I’ll keep you posted, heading out to mess with them now.

About that latch side rod clip for the outside door handle… Both of my clips needed replacing and I got new ones from LMC. They needed to be opened up on BOTH sides before they would work.

I ended up swapping the new clips for orig clips from the interior door handle as the interior rod clips are assembled on the bench and the orig rod clips were easier to use for the latch side rod clip for the outside door handle.

So passenger side latch with both door handles mocked in, looking into exterior door lock…. Forgot about those.

Re: '74 C10 door assembly order?

The order I ended up using.

1) Latch with both interior/exterior handle and locks.
- On the bench, Attach the lock rod and interior door rod to the latch, also attach the interior door handle to the interior door rod
- On the bench, Slide but do not clip the exterior door rod clip in place on the latch.
- Mount Latch to door, Make sure to get the lock rod thru the hole in the door before screwing the latch in place.
- Insert exterior door handle rod into latch and slide clip into lock position.
- The interior door handle was not bolted in place until I finished working on the door. This gave me a little more room to work in the door.

2) Regulator and Side glass
- Glass into sash tracks from the outside the door
- I started with front wheel into track and rear into slot on the track
- Roll window down centering as you do and push it back to latch when all the way down.

3) Vent Window
- I tried to put this in first but it leaves no (or very little) room to slide the side glass in so I tried it this way. Seems alot easier and there is plenty of room to get the vent window in as long as the rear channel is out and the glass is slid back.
- I put Silicone on the rubbers they are new and helped slide them forward and up into place.

4) Rear Track and door glass run.
- Most of the Door glass run goes in easy starting from the top.
- I siliconed the bottom of the glass run rubber and was able to slide it down the track between the glass (window rolled down). Probably other ways but this took me 1 minute so...

5) Wipers/sweeps whatever you call em..

6) Mirrors

Done.
