on the farm in the midwest, always rolled out with something in the truck..

12 gauge pump shotgun for snakes or fast moving varmints up close and any fast movin' critters in season

.30 caliber bolt or lever action rifle for big varmints or predators harassing livestock and deer of course

some folks may have had a rimfire like a .22lr bolt, lever, or auto rifle for small game or varmints..

winchester shotguns were popular, my dad, uncle, and grandpa all had JC Higgins [sears house brand] 12ga pumps while I had a remington 870 12ga pump..

winchester and remington .308, and .30-06 caliber bolt action and winchester and marlin 30/30 caliber lever action were popular rifles..

if your trying to fit a certain motif from the 60's, any of these will suit.. the types of guns typically used in pickup windows were wood stocked, blued finish, economical American brands that the average person could afford and allow to get scuffed and banged up.. only wealthy people would subject higher end guns to get beat up in a vehicle gun rack..

I carried a 572 Remington Pump .22 in my '64 in high school.
I didn't get a shotgun until I was a senior & it was too long to ride the rifle rack in my truck!

I want to add a replica gun (This is England where even a knife over 3” is illegal) to my truck when it is done too.

People here freak about all sorts of ****, including guns, fortunately I am not English, so I will add some interesting flair to my truck.


I love the guitar in the rear window though, may even copy the idea later.

When I am over in St Louis in September, I will look,at what looks good.

I think shooting an M60 may be fun, but for the truck a simple vintage 50-60’s gun is a better look.

Back in the day, my gun rack usually carried my Remington 788 in .243 cal and my buddy's Remington 700 in .270 cal.

Or sometimes, fishing poles.

As you can see from the above replies, there's no single correct answer. Depends on what you're doing at the time.

If you're going for a classic look, I would suggest a 30-30, preferably a pre-'64 Winchester.

I don't know about all over but in the south a gun or two in the rack was as common as a pack of cigarettes in your pocket whether you lived in a city or in the country. Many people didn't even lock their vehicles at night. Gun theft wasn't really a problem back then. Occasionally it happened. Heck, we slept with our doors and windows open too as home a/c was something only the wealthy had.

I would go with the 30-30 lever action , for what I think is a great look ,,thats what I had in the back window of my 65 Chevy truck .. mine was a hex barrel,,should of kept it..

I remember drilling the holes for the rack and the screws vibrated out ,,so then I went a couple sizes bigger and punch the holes out and they didn't vibrate out

Shotgun - Mostly Remington 870 pump, you could buy at K-mart for a C-note.
Rifle - Here in Kansas was either a 22 which was a Remington Nylon 66 good for rabbits or a 30-30 lever action, Marlin 336, good for coyotes. The city slickers didn't carry guns, it was mainly farmers.

I've got a 50 cal AR15. That'd flip the switch on a few people if put in your back window. I even named it "Snowflake".

In HS most every student had a bolt rifle and pump 12 in back window during fall time. Duck, pheasant, goose or deer hunt before and after school

In South Africa this with .22 Magnum/410 over under was my dads tool of choice in his Mercedes Benz.

Often came home with all sorts of small game, for the pot.

I love my.357/20 gauge over and under. It's great for anything.
