55-59 Fleet - Single Driver sun Visor

My 59 GMC Fleet has a burlap covered sun visor which I will put back on.

I think it is oem, may be wrong. It was on the truck - may have been best part of truck. 8-)

Does anyone else have an oem factory burlap covered sun visor on or with their truck?

Re: 55-59 Fleet - Single Driver sun Visor

The GM Heritage Center archives don't show standard equipment or option lists for 59 nor 58 for that matter. No help there. I don't know what stovebolt might have.

Burlap is not listed as an interior option in my 57 GMC sales literature. You might be able to find other year sales brochures.

Honestly, that visor looks like it has been recovered.

Re: 55-59 Fleet - Single Driver sun Visor

The single visor was standard equipment from 47 though 59 and the second visor was an extra cost option or part of the "deluxe" trim package.

Visors were/are on the inside, the silly looking thing on te outside that no one would be seen driving in public with unless they wore a cheap flannel suit and fendora hat is/was a frost shield that never showed on the car hobby scene until lowrider magazine showed up on the news stands in the mid 70's.

Re: 55-59 Fleet - Single Driver sun Visor

Well, we know Fleet options may be different. I am still looking also. Yea and please re-cover my sun visor in feed sack burlap, maybe.

I did have my 67 bench seat re-covered in a vinyl and a type burlap in Irwin TX. But it is nothing like a feed sack.

Re: 55-59 Fleet - Single Driver sun Visor

I found another couple 56 58 59 GMC Fleets un-restored that I can only tell that the visors were a brown. I will also take a pic of the other side of mine.

Re: 55-59 Fleet - Single Driver sun Visor

all the ones I have seen are some type of cardboard. sorry I can't be more help.
recovering them would update them for sure, and the material is up to the owner's likes.

Re: 55-59 Fleet - Single Driver sun Visor

I believe this truck was with the Forest Service when they had the dark green. I do not know what year they went to the light green. Can't disagree on not being oem or they were used very little.

AD0S 3894190 The bracket comes up as a 69-72 GM. So probably re-covered. And says RH. thanks guys 8-)

Re: 55-59 Fleet - Single Driver sun Visor

That visor does look factory, but from the late 60’s and up factory.
GM may have done something in your time frame, but maybe it didn’t last, which makes yours rare. I do like the look, like it belonged on a farm truck.

Re: 55-59 Fleet - Single Driver sun Visor

Dang thing had to be RH. I only have one LH now in the 59 GMC. Maybe I can interchange the holders. I just want it on the left side none on the right.

Re: 55-59 Fleet - Single Driver sun Visor

Well the Burlap visor cover thing showa that you never want to assume about things on these trucks. I'd bet tthat the burlap was somerting that was left over from a larger project at the upholstry shop that recovered that visor. I saved a lot of money on the cushions for the cabin of my boat because the shop gave me a big discount on material left over from another project. The special marine foam ran the price back up though.

Re: 55-59 Fleet - Single Driver sun Visor

Forest Service guys can be pretty creative. DIY visor upholstery probably right up their alley.

55-59 trucks RH and LH visors are different. You can use a LH visor on the RH side but if you swing it toward the passenger door it will not stay parallel to the roof.

Re: 55-59 Fleet - Single Driver sun Visor

I changed the rod and it is now on the 59 GMC. It is about 4 inches longer than the cardboard one I took off but still looks cool.

Re: 55-59 Fleet - Single Driver sun Visor

It looks good and blocks the sun when needed life is good.

This is one reason that I will never restore any vehicle to original though. Too much nonsense on what is exactly correct for said vehicle. That said, I am a bit of a stickler in that if you tell me that you "restored" your truck I expect i to be exactly as it would have sat in the showroom or on the dealers lot the day it was sold new with only factory or dealer option accessories or period for when it was new accessories and that includes wheels.

I'd imagine that that burlap covered visor was done at an upholstery shop at some time maybe when the seat was recovered with original material and unless you are going to be in judged shows showing as a perfectly original truck in competition where it might cost you points it shouldn't be an issue.
