could use some wood working help
I am trying to renovate my wife's childhood rocking chair for her birthday. I am not a typical wood worker but figured I would give it a shot. Over the years the glue has broken down on the top half of things but the bottom is pretty solid. Couple questions.
Should I try to work the bottom half loose and reglue while doing this or leave alone? I could not get them to budge and skeert I am gonna break something. What type of glue is best nowadays to glue this back together? It will get painted back white. Should I glue before paint or after? Thanks .

Re: could use some wood working help
Glue before paint. I use Titebond. Here is their product line:
http://www.titebond.com/guide If the bottom joints are tight I'd leave them alone.

Re: could use some wood working help
I was going to say clamp and/or ratchet strap till glue sets. I deleted it because it looks like that might be hard to do right with the way that chair is made. Probably best just to get it all ready, apply glue, and stick all together real tight and quick. Of what you see at hardware stores and the big boxes are three types, usually, and I get the waterproof (Titebond III Ultimate) kind just because it's good for most uses. but looking at that link I gave I see they offer faster setting, which is good for unclamped, but certainly make it harder to do... gotta work fast!. And that stuff you'd have to order up. You might not have the time for that.

Re: could use some wood working help
It went back together pretty good. Still gonna need a couple more coats of paint, the wood soaking it up big time. All in all momma was happy for her birthday.

Re: could use some wood working help
Like Bill said,, it came out real good.. but. even so ,,heavy heavy people should not sit it a chair or rocker like this one .,.no glue can hold long with big folks ..And I quit Elmers glue a long time ago .. I use ?? I forget but its better.

Thanks guys, Tim, yes it is a kid size chair that I think was actually used for her doll collection way back.

Re: could use some wood working help
I think most children's chairs end up broken by people who are to big for them. Probably a lot are the kid who's chair it is who got too big.
