Simple Question on Front Wheel Bearings

Should the inner race spin on the spindle?

Re: Simple Question on Front Wheel Bearings

It does turn on the spindle. You should be able to turn it by hand with ease but it should have no up and down movement. It shouldn't be sloppy on the spindle. There also should not be any ridges on the spindle under the bearing that are deeper that if you dragged your finger nail over it would catch on them. It should also not look like it is galled or metal from the bearing race has burnished of on to the spindle or have a yellowish or blue discoloration. these colors changes would be a sign of high heat possible changing the temper of the spindle at that point.

Slight shininess, slight ridges and slight discoloration , usually graish color are normal as is the race turning on the spindle. Remember that once the preload is properly set on the bearings it will not turn on the spindle while you drive it.
