v8 283 carburetor

I have a 1965 c20 with original 283. Has the 2 barrel rochester. I want to upgrade but still use stock manifold and aircleaner. I don't mind having another 2 barrel but if its possible to have a 4 barrel that fine too. Was thinking Holley this time around but not sure what will work but still keep original look with air cleaner. Also want to electric choke setup. Can someone lead me in right direction. Thank you

Re: v8 283 carburetor

I have a basically stock 283 in my 65 Suburban that came from a '63 Biscayne with a 2 BBL. I'm using a stock 327 intake with an open element K&N filter and a Carter carb.

Re: v8 283 carburetor

You can use the stock and rebuild it. I like the edelbrock 600.

Re: v8 283 carburetor

I'd suggest a 500cfm on a 283 instead of the 600cfm. I (and many others) use the Edelbrock 600 on a 350.

Re: v8 283 carburetor

A 500 CFM carb would be better suited to a 283.

Re: v8 283 carburetor

If an Edelbrock 500 cfm is what you may be shopping for; keep in mind that both electric and the manually choked versions feature the same same jetting which is for performance as opposed to fuel economy.

WOW 375 for the 500. 300 for the 600.

Re: v8 283 carburetor

ok so far one of you thinks 500 cfm will be better for 283 and others say I can use an adapter for a 600 in stock manifold? Also we just open the valve cover to get the head numbers . Did research and said it is from 80-86 305/350. The block itself is 283. Sorry trying not to get off topic but just giving an idea what I'm working with. I bought this truck a month ago and am dying to get my first drive in it.

Sure looks like someone went overboard when they adjusted the valves!
I don't think I've ever seen that much thread above the rocker nut!

Re: v8 283 carburetor

If you haven't driven it much yet, keep the 2 barrel for now and get some miles on it. The results of your drives may suggest other priorities for your money and time.

If the two barrel is in good shape, nothing wrong with running it for a while.

Make sure your timing is set proper. If it still has the points distributor, consider an HEI and also swap plugs to take advantage of the .045 gap HEI wants.

Re: v8 283 carburetor

Looks like your heads are 416 (last three digits) 305 heads which are from the high output 305's. I use those on my 283 too and they breath pretty darn well on a 283. I hope they are in good shape because if so, they are a definite plus. Also, both 500 and 600 cfm Edlebrocks have the same "footprint". If one needs an adapter, the other would too. Post up a pick of your stock 4 barrel manifold so we can all be clear as to what you have on hand.

Re: v8 283 carburetor

It doesn't look like the carb is leaking much. Where the heck is that heater hose going? I agree with getting the engine running as it is first to be sure the engine is worth putting more money into.

As for the Edelbrock carb. Yes a 600 will work but will be more difficult to get it tuned right on a 283 since it is a little too big for what the engine needs. The physical size of a Edelbrock 500 cfm and a 600 cfm is the same and both are a square flange.

Re: v8 283 carburetor

That heater hose is part of his pcv system Captain. Likely the inline pcv is behind the carb.
Looks like his old roaddraft connection is the hose by his fuel line that likely attaches to his air cleaner.

Re: v8 283 carburetor

So im going to call my neighbor down the road after work today. He is a retired vietnam war veteran who worked as a mechanic on aircrafts. He has tons of old chevys in his land. He has alot of knowledge on these. I just wanted to share with yall because I like others opinions and what I should go with. Just to keep my options open. Think I will have him rebuild this carby for me for now so I dont have to spend to much and decide if I want a different motor later. CAPTAINFAB and GEEZER#99 he said that hose is suppose to have some kind of breather on it like a pcv valve? and the breather cap on oil tube shouldn't have the breather cap just normal cap? Yea I was alil sad that the heads were not original when he told me. BUT i guess now that AcampoDave pointed out that those are 305 heads (14014416) with higher output makes me feel alot better. Im not trying to build a hot rod just something fun and safe to drive and hopefully a daily driver someday because truck payments suck haha. I have owned about 6 of these trucks in the last 12 years and I still am learning alot and have alot more to learn and understand. Thanks for taking the time with me to figure out this mess.

I think I will order this one to replace mine. Seems like a good price and I can send my core in once I get it on my truck and running. Cheaper than any other place I looked at so far. Hope it works great.
