spring sprung early

This is the earliest I have ever dispatched a rattlesnake. My girlfriend and grandaughter walked past it and the dog alerted. 8 rattles and a button

Re: spring sprung early

You can keep 'em, I would just as soon not see (or hear!) any of 'em. Good dog you have there!
One of our dogs will avoid snakes even if they are dead, even shed skins. Our other dog is braver.... or dumber!

Haven't seen any snakes yet, just the first two ticks of the season. Lizards aren't even out yet here.

Now me, I wouldn't have killed it. I would have caught it and moved it to a location where it wouldn't bother anyone, but I used to hunt and catch them so that wouldn't be a problem.....

Re: spring sprung early

Used to see them once in a while on the fire roads behind the house and on occasion on the driveway when it was hot. Sure don't miss hearing those rattles! Id always heard them after Id nearly stepped on them. Yeah, forget trying to stay calm and back away while the damn thing is in between your feet looking up at you!

Anyone here ever eat one?

I like to go down to Northeast Alabama and get the big boys, Eastern Diamondbacks..... My brother caught a 5 footer in his garden when he lived in Woodville. I have never eaten any.

Just curious, are they endangered where you used to catch them? I know that here, they used to be everywhere but urban sprawl has all but done them in here. Heck come to think of it, I haven't so much as seen a Garter or King snake in a few years.

No, not endangered there. I don't think there is much danger of urban sprawl in that area. My brother owned 7 acres and because of all the big rocks the only animals he could have was Goats. They were the only animal that could navigate the rocks. Only a big enough area with no rocks for a really small house and a smaller garden.

Down here in Douglas, AZ we have what are called the Mohave Rattlesnake...considered the most poisonous in the US. Particularly dangerous for the folks that have to spend their lives patrolling the Southern AZ deserts.

... We picked a few carcasses up off of the roads where people had stoned them. Most of them were missing the rattles though... I don't know why I've never tried eating it. I have eaten everything else, including Coon, Possum, Pigeon pie, Alligator tail, Crawdads, Turtle, and mountain oysters. Just to mention a few.....

My brother moved to Albany, GA a few years ago so your supper is safe now..

We have an abundance of them here. It makes me feel better having one less for my grand daughter to encounter.

Makes perfect sense to me.... when I find 'em while walking in the woods, I leave 'em alone. But when they get too close to people, especially little ones, they gotta go. I am neither brave enough nor crazy enough to safely relocate them....

Many of us say the only good one is a dead one on a good pair of boots. However there are those who see it another way. Are they a protected species?

I don't have the skills for relocating them either

Re: spring sprung early

I believe Timber Rattlers are protected as a "threatened species" in all States that they reside.

I'd be careful with that picture Mongo.

Snakes don't bother me so I don't bother them.

Re: spring sprung early

My FIL had a pic of a rattler killed on their farm back in the 60s. 3 men standing shoulder to shoulder with the snake draped over the shoulders of each outside man. It had to have been 10' or more long. Much like the one in mongos pic.
And they have a python epidemic in florida glades according to the news.

Re: spring sprung early

They "claimed" that one was over 15ft..me thinks they stretched that a bunch..but I did see a couple more pics ..one of the rattles..they said there were 37..a guy had them laying on his hand and the rattles were as long as his hand...and another pic of its head next fo a guys hand...the head looked as big as a hanburger bun...no matter what its a bigun...and rightlfully so it was killed in a area called devils cellar
