School me on oil pans - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Needing an oil pan for my BBC Mark IV. There are so many choices out there I'm not 100% sure on where to start.

This engine is a 489 with a forged eagle 4.25" stroker kit. So I know I need a pan that will clear that much stroke. I've put a lot of money into this engine and I don't want to skimp on the oil system. I've found a moroso oil pan kit on Jegs that seems like a decent setup, but for a few more bucks I can get one with a windage tray and a crank scraper. These kits come with everything needed for the oil system.

I want a pan that will clear my stock crossmember on my 2wd. I just dont know how deep of a sump to get and how many quarts capacity pan to get.

I've been shopping in the street/strip category. Any other info I need to provide just let me know. Thank you.

Several oil pans on the market ranging to over 500 bucks....for street use, I would not spend the money, make sure the oil pan clears the crank and call it good. scrapers are not needed...unless you have tons of cash, buy it !!!!

If you are a subscriber, Engine Masters latest episode was about oil pans. They test factory stock and off the shelf Milidon with baffles. Basically it did make a difference of quite a few HP but all at high RPMs. I forget the exact numbers but it made a surprising difference. But, just as high RPMs.

There are other advantages but it really depends on your use and needs if it was worth it. Racing, absolutely!

PS There was a lot of information on this show. If you are not Motor Trend Subscriber it will come out on YouTube in a few weeks. This was the last video they did and I think it would be well worth watching. You can see the results on the dyno and they talk a little about theory and practicality. I learned a lot watching it.

If you installed a HV oil pump, you should have more than 5 qts of oil. If you don't have room for a larger oil pan, change the oil pump to a standard volume oil pump.

first off, what's it going into? truck/Car? Lowered bags? You don't want the pan's sump to hang down to low (below x-member) Thats how i would choose one and 7qt should do it. Plenty out there. 1st pic summit cheap 2nd milodon more $$$

I'm running a 496 stroker kit in my 67 c10. I used a stock truck big block pan with no issues. don't think you need to worry about any clearance issues with the 4.25 stroke.

I will have to check out that episode when it comes out. I did watch the episode on air cleaners - pretty interesting stuff!

I haven't installed an oil pump. Actually haven't even bought one yet. I was probably just going to buy the kit which will come with the oil pump as well.

This is going into my 69 2wd c10 pickup. I have 2 1/2" drop spindles with stock height springs. So it's not going too low. I guess I was never worried about it dragging on the ground or anything. I'm just worried about the pan interfering with my stock crossmember.

Tiger joe - that is interesting... when I was looking at pans the details state on the site for stock pans that they aren't cleared for more than a 4" stroke. So I guess I started looking into the deeper pans. I guess I have the stock one on there now. Engine is on engine stand. I've turned it over a few times, never really felt the crank rubbing. How does your pan handle that engine?

Trucks typically have a quite a bit of room for oil pans unless you move the engine forward unnecessarily. Since your truck is lowered, you don't want a pan much deeper than stock. One of the pans that 61K10 posted should work.

How does your pan fit with the crossmember there? Do you have any pics of the undercarriage?

It’s still on my engine stand! I’ll update when I get it installed finally. I think the F body pan is the one I went with because sump slightly shorter.
