gear vendors o/d?
Ok so my truck I using for towing sometimes, and do some highway driving. I found a complete sm465 trans with a older gear vendors o/d unit. comes with bell housing, shifter, and high/low range switch for the shifter. I can pick up for 1300.00 for everything.
What would you do? I would end up with a extra trans that I could keep as a spare or sell outright for about 150.00. Im looking at the gas mileage savings and wear and tare on the engine. this is my everyday driver. truck has a 3.73 open rear. |

I would be all over it. Not only do you get the 4 gear overdrive. But when in traffic you get all the other gears split too. You can idle along in 2nd over at 25 mph. Or 1st over at 4 mph, or towing up a hill in 3rd over at 45 mph at 2500 rpm instead of 3200. All good stuff.

If everything is in good shape, it sounds like a good option. Maybe check with gear vendors to make sure parts are not a problem. May never need them but would be a bummer if hard to get or real pricey.

Re: gear vendors o/d?
I was going to go the gear vendor way but for the cost of buying a 4L80E with a TCI harness you will save your self 700 to 1000 dollars.
Plus with the New TCI plug in stand alone harness it has 3-4 setting. 1 for Gas savings 2 for pulling and towing 3 for Drag racing or sports car mold. i think they make one for icy roads but not sure. Plus the 4L80E is a little bigger then the th400 but same bell housing.Plus i've been told its the best transmission GM has other then the Allison I just got done talking to my trans guy 4 days ago.he said to buy the newer one from 2005--2015. They have Almost have no problem with them.other then People not changing the trans fluid every 80,000 to 130,000.Its a bullet proof trans TCI harness runs $600-900.00 an its a plug an play system the controller is the computer.Plus you can twink it to the way you drive you can use this behind a Carb or fuel injected. |

I just bought gear vendor. Mine was not complete. Gv doesn’t sell just parts you have to send it in for repair. You can run them without computer to a toggle switch. It’s a good price if working leap of faith that it does work

Re: gear vendors o/d?
Not only that but with just a 4 speed auto you loose the ability to split the gears...
I would be all over that combo for 1300.

Re: gear vendors o/d?
Not looking to switch to automatic yet. When I do im looking at a 700r4, I only drive normal, 200hp. crate motor.
I will still have to have the drive shaft shortened. Im considering it though. |

Re: gear vendors o/d?
Don't think so - pretty sure the GV only works once you get to that 35 MPH range...

Re: gear vendors o/d?
I would use it while towing up hill for 2nd and 3rd gears. Also for highway o.d.
