Yeah, with rear engine cars you just have to learn how to use that weight hanging off the rear to your advantage. I set a slight negative camber on my '56 Bug, but also added a sway bar and Koni shocks. 911s did well on the track, in spite of the heavy tail end.

So Mark, is that an original red car? I do think your wife will enjoy rides in that Corvertible. Can't wait to see what you do with it. Let it marinade and I know you'll come up with a tasty plan.

What's it been, a year and a half? Oh well, I just wanted to post this picture of an AMT kit (being reproduced) where you would see it. I was looking on Ebay and one is for sale. Cool picture

I was thinking it might be fun to get the corvair on the road this spring. Not worry about it’s looks, just make sure the drivetrain was close to 100% reliable.

I joined the largest Corvair forum, it’s a sleepy place compared to here. I also contacted the Corvair club. I was looking for someplace that sold remanned engine and transaxles. Crickets, what a weird thing. The local chapter president called me and said, just drive like it is and find another used running unit to swap in when it breaks .

Someone finally mentioned they thought a guy over in Spokane did them. I was trying to stay localish but it looks like I’m to have to go national.

I can get the power glide done locally, so at least I have that going for me

First car on the street for me.63 monza spyder, 4peed turbo.Silver, black interior.Uncle bought new in 63.My brother wound up with it and I swapped him my first car I bought,55 belaire coupe at 15.Got tired of waiting for engine to get rebuilt for 55.Didnt have it long blew transaxel.Was a blast though 17 years old.No speed limit outside city on highway back in the day.Great times.

We had a couple. Always stick shifts, and always multiple carburetion.

I remember dad used to put the car up in the air and drop the engine down onto the radio flyer wagon in order to pull the engine.

He used to break the half shafts in 'em. I still have (and use) a pry bar he made from an old broken shaft.

I bought the one I posted earlier in the thread. Had no plans to do anything with it for a year or two. I was out looking at it recently and was thinking might be fun to get on the road.

I’m looking to buy a finished engine and transaxle. Prefer to buy from a shop that’s been around awhile that offers some sort of warranty. Been burned a couple times buying drivetrain stuff from private parties ... Oh yes it’s all new built with the best stuff...liars ��

I think i posted in a different thread some time ago but Mom had a 64 Spyder convertible. 4spd and turbo. 80-90% finished on the resto and it was vandalized along with several other cars in the area that night. Dad got so mad he called the junk man to come get it. This is all I saved off of it before it left, kept all 4 of them. It was a sore subject for a long time.

Here's one I worked on a few years back. It has a small block in it, can't remember the kit manufacturer. It was converted years ago.

The mid-engine small block is a great idea. There was a coupe for sale that had that done just up the road from me years ago. I thought a lot about it, but...

Anyone can rebuild a Corvair engine. I wouldn't hesitate to do one.

My dad had a '64 like 72 Paul described, silver/black int Monza Coupe 4spd.

My mom has one,a 1965 two door with a 4 speed.She loves it,my step dad got it for her birthday 5 years ago.Said she always wanted a Corvair and was so happy to get one.My step dad did the restoration work.It is her baby and no one touches it.

I believe Crown Manufacturing made the early V8 conversion kits didn't they? I've watched some videos of V8 'vairs. They look like an awful lot of good fun. Can you imagine a screaming LS sitting behind you while you power around a road course?

That is one heck of good looking engine in that Car.. seems like it would be hard to keep that big ol motor cool with out a radiator.. what did ya see that would take care of that ,,if it is a problem ?

GOPAPA if you look close there is a air dam to direct air into the front mounted radiator. He didn't have the front open in these pics. You can also see the coolant tank top right corner of the engine pic.

Depending on where and when he lived, maybe people didn't drive like complete lunatics, and gave him enough braking room.
