A 1970 (small rear window) C50 Wrecker.

The plan:

Make it four wheel drive. I have an SM465, 203/205 doubler combo for it. I will also install a set of 2.5ton Rockwells under it...

Sounds like a cool project! (BTW all conventional C40-C90?'s had small back windows, I used to drive a '70 C/50 grain truck and it also had a small back window, not sure why GM did that)

Ok, so maybe it's not a 67. It was listed as a 70, but when I saw it, I thought 67.

I will probably be swapping a C10 cab onto it, as this one's rusted.

The only problem that I have with the axle combo is weight handling.

I am thinking 5 tons may have to do it.

The C50 is a five ton truck, right? GCVW on this is from 15K to 26,500.

If I went with the 5 ton axles from a mil spec truck, that would be 20K. Still not enough to hit the top GCVW.

I am around all day... heck, unless you're taking the yellow one it may go on this!

The wrecker bed's going to be sandblasted, repaired and powder coated.

Jim brought back a HUGE powdercoating oven for a gent over in Merrimack who still apparently owes him a bit...

Sorry for the trees where she sits... it's a bit tough to move this sucker around, without it running.

Stats:

Tired worn out 292 (I assume) I-6
Some sort of 5 speed transmission
HUGE rear axle
dry rotted tires
a ton of bondo
and 15-20 layers of peeling paint over rust.

The plan:
free flowing 350 or a 427 Tall deck.
Might fix this cab, might swap on the one seen above.
keep it pretty low, but run a 46" Michelin Mil Tire on 20" rims.
disk brakes in the front, pinion brakes with drums on the rear. Should stop on a dime!

around here the phone company and pacific gas & electric both use all wheel drive BIG trucks for boom trucks and cable stretchers. theres a f*&d f-700? in a local wrecking yard with some gnarly all wheel drive axles, huge transfer case and transmission still in it. both companies also use G.M. trucks that are real monsters, they sit so tall that the headlights are in the bumper--i assume to meet calif's headlight height laws. if you could pick one up at auction for the right price, you would have a matched set of HEAVY DUTY running gear components.
looks like a fun project, please post more pics as you make progress.

Do you know if that was a manufactured(ie Holmes, Century) towing deck or a homemade unit? Some specs on the towing deck would be interesting, to me anyways.

Judging by the front sidemarkers on the fenders and the newer style cab lights that would be a '70, very cool!

That 5 speed is probably a Spicer, Clark, or a New Process. Is that a hi-lo axle or a single speed?

It's a 2 speed rear axle (hi-lo).

I haven't looked, but it's probably a Clark. I may try adapting a t-case to the butt end of it.

Actually, size won't increase too much. Those tires on there are pretty large. I am guessing about 36" tall.
