Re: Pics from our fire - REPLACE YOUR CHEAP SURGE PROTECTOR!

PROGRESS!!!

They have got the section of the roof damaged by the fire replaced (rafters and totally re-decked) and they were able to get the back of the house roofed and are going to do the front tomorrow. The windows came in today, so they said it will be totally closed up by the weekend! They are moving faster than I ever thought they would!

Re: Pics from our fire - REPLACE YOUR CHEAP SURGE PROTECTOR!

The new roof looks great. I love the architectural shingles. They look much better than the old standard shingles that were on the house. However, I did much prefer the look of our old wood framed, 12 light windows. I know these new double pane windows will be much more effecient, but I liked the look of the old ones. We were given the option to go back with wood framed windows, but several people told me quality of today's wood windows are WAY less than the old ones, and the new ones would be a much more viable replacement.

Roof looks great! The new windows will be much more energy efficient while not the classic styling you were wanting...

Re: Pics from our fire - REPLACE YOUR CHEAP SURGE PROTECTOR!

I think modern windows can be so efficient we can end up breathing each others bad air. ... the drafty farm house I grew up in always had fresh air blowing in through the leaky windows.

Cool pictures of a nice house you have, and thanks for the heads up on Surge protectors. ... I checked ours. ... and I super cleaned the dryer vent hose and pipe the other day.

No, it was pretty much all destroyed. The heat smoke bubbled the paint on the faces of the tach dash, so it will need all needs guages, bezels, lense, etc. The tins are OK though. We haven't turned in all our claims forms yet, so I'm not sure how much (if any) I can recover through the insurance co. We have been so focused on the house, I haven't given the truck stuff too much thought yet. I'm sure that kind of stuff will really hit home when we get back home and I'm bored and want to work on my trucks!

not that this is a big priority but I did get tach faces in black from whitegauges.net. not sure if they make one appropriate for the diesel tach but they sell those as well as blank lenses where you apply your own numbers....

We're getting close!! The exterior is done, and the sheetrock is finished and primed. They are going to start painting the walls Monday. We have to go this weekend and pick out lighting, vanities, sinks, toilets, etc. They are saying 3 to 4 more weeks. I can't wait to get home!

Looking great! So did they give you allowances for all the fixtures? Interested in how they handled all that.

Yes, they gave us a $1147 allowance on lighting. We were actually able to upgrade pretty much everything over what we had. They do the same thing on built-in stuff like the cabinets, vanities, counters, etc. So far, I can't say anything bad about State Farm. They have treated us well, and most cases, we have got at least at good of stuff as we had. The only things that I consider downgrades were some of the things that aren't made anymore.

Re: Pics from our fire - REPLACE YOUR CHEAP SURGE PROTECTOR!

Looks good. Crappy way to get a remodel but you gotta look at the positive. My grandmother place burned out completely and my dad and I had to tear it down and put it in dumpsters. Its incredible the damage fire can do. Im just thankful that she was able to get out and only because I had redone the floors that were water damaged due to broken water pipes and the 70's particle board fell apart. i put in all new subfloor and redid most of the place about 3 months before it burned. But as much as it turned out to be a loss of money its the only reason she was able to get out. Everything is always replaceable,it may take time but the possessions arent that important.

Re: Pics from our fire - REPLACE YOUR CHEAP SURGE PROTECTOR!

Its really coming together now! Just a few more weeks now! They just have to finish up a little trim and put on the counter tops, etc and then they just have refinish the floors and replace A/C ducts.

Re: Pics from our fire - REPLACE YOUR CHEAP SURGE PROTECTOR!

Our master bathroom is "my" room. This fire destroyed a lot character and a lot of the old school features I loved about this house. We went back with modern kitchen cabinets and updated the middle bathroom, but I went back old school with the master bath. The house had an old hexagon tile, and i found something similiar and went back with wainscoting and chair rail. I went with the old style chrome fixtures with white porcelein handles. It may be old, it may be out of style, but I don't plan on moving and I'm going back with it how I want it, dammit!

very cool. like that you kept the master with the character of the house. Glad you'll be home soon. If you don't mind me asking...How did they handle personal belongings/furnishings? Allowance also? And I assume you picked them out holding off to bring them home when it's done?

Also sorry for your loss. Glad nobody was hurt.

You know, it truly amazes me how many people will trust expensive vital components to a cheap surge protector which they bought at a yard sale for $1. Having said that, all my electronics are protected by industrial quality Liebert UPS.

Re: Pics from our fire - REPLACE YOUR CHEAP SURGE PROTECTOR!

Its getting pretty close now! Everything is done except the floor and the HVAC unit. They got all the floors rough sanded yesterday and will finish sand and put down the polurethane this week. This house has gorgeous heart pine floors, and I'm so glad they were able to save them. My replacement insurance would have put hardwood floors back in the house, but there's no way they would look these. I can't wait to see them finished.
