How to find out lift size and what size tire works

So i have a 85 Chevy Suburban K20.. im not exactly what size lift it has on it and i was wondering what the best way to find that out is (it currently has 36" tires on it).. also i want to buy new tires for it but i cant find any 36's in the kind of tire i want.. so if i go up to a 37" tire would that be to big or not? hence the reason i need to find out my lift size... any hints or anything will help.. thanks guys!
