Yukon knocking noise?

Hey guys I'm new to this section of the forum, I'm usually hiding out in the 60-66 board. But anyways I've been having this problem with my truck (04 Yukon), when it gets close to my oil change like within 500 miles it starts making some loud ticking/banging noises from the top end of the motor, kinda sounds like a diesel, it only happens when the motor is completely cold and happens for about 5 minutes til the motor starts to warm up. My Dad and I think its a stuck lifter or something up in the valves, any ideas? What about adding some sort of additive to my oil? The truck only has about 70000 miles on it and runs perfect after the knocking dies down. Thanks for the help.

what kind of oil filter are ypou running? sounds liek ti is runnign low on oil. that motor holds 6 qt of oil. as to filter stay away from fram. run a purator or ac delco filter, or even wix all of these are good filters. i would put a bottle of mystery oil in it and go from there

Re: Yukon knocking noise?

Sure it's not piston slap? What kind of oil are you running in it? These motors have very short pistons with low tension rings which allows for some piston slap when cold. How often are you changing the oil? Is it using any?

Re: Yukon knocking noise?

You might try Seafoam before your oil change. I had similar noise in other-half's car. Half a can of Seafoam; no more noises.

Re: Yukon knocking noise?

Yeah Ive heard about the piston slap back when I had my 02 Silverado, It could be that, not sure. Did an oil change and noise went away.. for now anyways. I'll take it in for waranty if it starts doing it again soon.

Re: Yukon knocking noise?

"Piston Slap" was supposedly eliminated by 2003. It shouldn't last more than 30 secs to a minute or so. 5 minutes is a long time. Mobil One really seems to quiet mine down in the winter and it's not audible in the summer in the warmer temps.

Re: Yukon knocking noise?

My 99 does it. My uncle bought a 99 new and an 03 new and they both have done it. The dealer kept telling him that it's normal and not to worry about it. He spoke with someone the other day and they were very aware of it and they told him to put a quart of transmission fluid in it when changing the oil. He did and so far it hasn't done it.

I'm kind of skeptical of the tranny fluid, but he's tickled to death with it so far.

Re: Yukon knocking noise?

We'll I guess I'm back here talking about my ticking noise again . So here it is. Everything was going fine since the last oil change then I drove it to the coast aprox 2 hours away. Came back and it was doing it really bad. Talked to the service manager at the place I bought it from and he said he would take a look at it. He thinks its a stuck lifer. They put a quart of Rislone in it. He said its an additive to help stuck lifters. It helped til I drove it to Medford aprox 30 minutes away. Now its doing it again and did it tonight the worst it ever has. So I'm taking it back in this week to see what they can do. Thats pretty interesting about the transmission fluid. What does he use, like 5 quarts reg oil and 1 quart trans? I will ask them if there would be any downfalls to using it. I wouldn't see why. It seems like my truck likes to start after long trips.

Re: Yukon knocking noise?

Yes, he puts one pint of tranny fluid each time he changes the oil. This guy that was telling him this is a GM mechanic and he said that three or four oil changes is all it will take and that it will probably stop all together. He's on his second oil change now and it's not ticking anymore. I will probably try it with mine the next time mine is due for an oil change.

Please keep us posted to what they tell you. Thank you for the update.

Re: Yukon knocking noise?

I'm deffinatly going to try it. Anything that wont cost alot and hopefully will fix my problem I'm all for it. How loud are your guy's noises that you have? Also when you drive it does it feel guttless, because mine does til the noise goes away.

Re: Yukon knocking noise?

Mine just does it when the truck is first started cold. It will tick for about fifteen to twenty seconds or so and it quits. It does it longer in the cold months of the winter, but i'd say for only a minute or so and it quits.

Re: Yukon knocking noise?

Mine is pretty loud and lasts for quite a while. Kinda sounds like someone sticking a stick into the fan maybe??

Re: Yukon knocking noise?

So I took my Yukon to the shop last night, they started it this morning and determined it was a stuck lifter. They said it would cost 2200 dollars just to fix it. I can't go that route. I think I'm going to try the ATF in my oil and change my oil this week because that always helps. My only concern is what problems could this pose in terms of hurting anything internally if I ignor the problem or is it just going to be an annoying noise. Also why did this happen in the first place.

Re: Yukon knocking noise?

Get some GM E.O.S. assembly lube and dump it in. I've done it on several 3.4 v6 vans to get em to quit making noise. I'd try some additives first, but be warned they can damage other stuff if used incorrectly. You can buy a used 5.3 or less than $2200... It'd probably cost less to put a used engine in it than the cost of pulling the heads to replace a lifter. Last 5.3 I had with a cracked head it was cheaper to put a lower mile than the truck used 5.3 than it was to buy a new head/gaskets/added labor....

Re: Yukon knocking noise?

I think I might seafoam the motor before my oil change. Couldn't hurt it.
