My 56 6bt 4X4 build.

So I hope I am doing this right.

This is My 56 GMC. I got the truck with no driveline abt 2 years ago. I installed all the driveline out of my extreamly rusted out 56 Napco 4X4. Drove it all of this summer. Now I realise that 100 ish HP No power anything and not being able to hit any highways isnt for me. So this winter I am going to swap the Cummins diesel and all the other driveline out of my 93 dodge . Also Rusty. All you guys from the south have no idea how good you have it. Most of our trucks in Canada are far rusty to even considder building , if they didnt go to the crusher log ago. So here is a few pics to get started.

The 56 , the Blk Ram donating driveline and the 56 Napco that started it all.

Dig the plywood door.... did I mention how rusty Cdn trucks can get .

Re: My 56 6bt 4X4 build.

Hi guys . Thanks for the replies . Orrie I have gone thru your build too many times to mention. I have all your powersteering images saved on my computer. It looks like a Dodge steering box is same as a gm box like you used. I plan to use the dodge steering box and mount it just like you did. I will use the orriginal steering column in the 56 . Luther just posted a few options he was considdering . Seems we are on the same page. I will likely have some more pics to post soon. I need to get all the orriginal driveline out as it is sold and I need the $$$$ to start on this part of the build.

Thanks again for the kind words all.

Re: My 56 6bt 4X4 build.

I thought I would take a moment to post this . The guy that bought my napco driveline is building this.

57 Gmc Detroit diesel. Story goes a garden center somewhere had 7 built back in 57

Who knows. Its so factory looking its sick.

When he is done he will have a 4 53 detroit , Napco 4X4 1 ton with a brownie box.

I jealous

Going to paint my Cummins Detriot Diesel Alpine Green. I guess I'm a wanna be. Lol.

6bt 56 I love the look of your truck. I always like the white hubcaps with the light blue. Are you going to try and reuse those hubcaps? It looks like we are going to be going through this swap together!

Re: My 56 6bt 4X4 build.

Thanks Mknittle

I was thinking the steering boxes were the same. My Ram has a new box in it. Now I can mount same as Orrie did. I love the old dodge . It has been off the road for a while and just doing work around the farm . I hop this driveline swap goes the way it is planned out in my head .. I will head south some day and bring home a rust free Ram with a cummins some day. Crummy bodies yes , but you really cant beat the driveline . My 05 ram has been a great truck as well but the new stuff scares me . Too much stuff doing too much.

Way back in the 70's when I drove OTR, I always heard that if you stop a Detroit from leaking it will blow up.

Re: My 56 6bt 4X4 build.

Thanks luther.

I have sold those wheels and tires with my driveline. Im going to use a set of 16 inch GM steelies . i just got a set of 70 to 72 hubcaps. Also white. Will have the same look just bigger wheels. A little more lift as well. I was loooking for the crome caps , but i considder my self luckey i found a nice set of white ones. Im looking for rubber. sumthing abt 33 tall and has the old skool snow tire look. Was going to use the BFG Mt but all you can get is the new tread pattern . Cool but does not suit the truck. Im trying to use the stock pedals in the frame . allready have the dual master in from the first build. clutch stuff looks like it will work together .... maby....

Those dodge bodys are pretty crappy to begin with. we have 3 around here and they are rust free but lots of cracks. I wouldnt have one if it wern't for the cummins engine!

Yours is going to be cool!

LOL yep it's no more after tomorrow..

Go into your user control panel and edit your "signature". Don't ask me how to change what it says in the link like mine because someone else did it for me.

Guess what? You're safe, the world didn't end. Awesome project you have going here. Your 56 is in really nice shape considering it's age. The 1st gen bodies are always crap, so don't feel bad. And don't disgrace that 6b by painting it that crap green. It'll never quit leaking oil.

No problem. Yep the Corvette is mine too. You should be fine not boxing your frame. I've seen a few old chevys with big power 5.9's and the frames take it. LOL on the paint detuning it. Nice helpers too! Be sure to check the KDP before you button the engine all up.
