Is it just me, or does the correct oil make a DD start better?

Drug home a '75 Chevy JV 70 with a 6v53 that though it ran was your proverbial ether baby. This spring I have cleaned it up some and changed out the god knows what and how old oil and replaced it with a pail of delo 100. It has started first time every time, and I mean right now....no extended cranking no hitting on one and picking up a few as you go, no ether. I have not adjusted anything or tuned it up (yet) it just seems like a whole different animal. Is it really that noticeable or is something else at work here?
