How much should a swb bed cost

I am looking for a swb bed in decent rust free shape. What is the going price for a bed in that shape?

Re: How much should a swb bed cost

A repop was around $2800 complete the last I knew. You're probably looking at close to that and bodywork.

Re: How much should a swb bed cost

Personally I would just buy a new bed, which is what I plan on doing. If your close to a dealer you can drive and pick it up to save on shipping, also what I plan on doing. You might spend a 1000 more, maybe even less than that, but you know what you have and wont find any surprises that someone tried to hide.

The other thing is actually finding a swb bed in decent shape might prove to be difficult in itself.

Re: How much should a swb bed cost

There is a pretty rough one in central TN on CL. They have 450 on it. Its a metal floor with a few waves. Saw one in NC on CL about a month or two ago for 650. Sold pretty quick. If you see a good rust free GM bed you can expect to pay close to 4 figures or more. A repop cost a lot, so thanks, I will just make mine out of long sides. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Anyone have experience with a aftermarket bed? The last time I bought repop parts I got so aggravated trying to get them to fit right I sold them and bought used gm parts.

I have one on my truck and it was near perfect. I got it from southern ky classics. I think it was 2200 plus shipping.

That may be the route I go if it was near perfect.

Bingo. I did the same. Was less expensive than fixing my rusted original. I had rust over both wheel openings, and in the metal floor. So Ky is where I got the pieces, they were marked "Goodmark" on the boxes. They fit pretty well. I'm happy with them.

Re: How much should a swb bed cost

I felt I got a GREAT deal on mine for $1200, say 6-7 years ago. That's without a tailgate. 95% good inside, 88% on the outside & no rust. The body man has been working on it for over a year (ha! no problem, I still have to build cart for the cab I stripped), but he has put a lot of time into it. By the time it's done I bet to have approaching 4K with paint. Today, IMO, a real good original bed will run 1800-2500............if you can find one. More than that if bordering perfect.

The ticket here is to only put aftermarket parts WITH aftermarket parts. I have bought a few bed kits from SOKY and have not had any problems with them.

I did try to put a couple aftermarket bed sides together with OEM floor, tubs and front header panel. It was a disaster!

Good Luck with your truck!

Re: How much should a swb bed cost

I have yet to find a "good" one locally. There are a lot for sale in the $4-600 range but every one I look at has rust, bondo, or some nasty dent damage, or all 3.

I gave up and bought a near perfect original paint longbed out of AZ. $800 and it was worth it. The floor is practically perfect as were the sides, which is what I wanted.

What do you charge to do a bed like that? I have no welding or bodywork skills.

I wonder what he actually has left, the album looks like it hasn't been updated in 5 years.

I only do stuff for me. I don't even have time to work on my own stuff.

Probably not an option for you then, as I'm sure by the time all the hours are added up, it would be much cheaper to buy a real shortbed.

Re: How much should a swb bed cost

I responded to a Craigslist ad in Knoxville for a 67 bed. He said he had 9 swb beds ranging from 750-3200. He said the 3200 bed was perfect. I don't know for sure but it might be that same guy with the truck farm.

Re: How much should a swb bed cost

I bought my bedsides thru carid.com and the product (when I finally got it) was really good but their customer service and speed are aweful IMO. their prices were the cheapest but now they are about as much as everyone else so deal with someone else that has better customer service. IMO I would still buy new repro vs. waiting for a solid bed to pop up and possibly have to travel to get it. I also don't like the idea of cutting up a good long bed. by the time you get it down, how much money & time did it take vs. saving up to buy a new one that you just put together?

{a story about Carid dealing with a different part (not bed sides): they had the wrong part number on their website for a 67 small window gasket, I ordered it only to eventually receive a large window gasket. I called, they said it was their fault (their website was wrong) but ordered me to send it back to them first before sending me the correct gasket and changing it on their website. I argued that they should send me the correct part and I will then send it back. I lost but did after arguing, did get the correct part} your choice though

Re: How much should a swb bed cost

Just bought a pair of sides from GMCPaul. 980 to my company's dock. Very nice, couple of minor touch ups and shot 'em. Internet only, but it came out good. 150 for the headgate, 150 for the tailgate. The repro tailgates are ok, but flimsy.

He has about 70- 67-72 trucks +/- and steel buildings full of original / NOS parts and complete trucks for sale the last time I was there a few months ago the place was wall to wall trucks don't go by those old pictures , These 67-72 trucks are what he does for a living , He does shipping and sells on Craigslist / ebay. As far as prices go he's been fair with me on what I buy .No fancy office or showroom just a God fearing good ol country boy

Transportation a reasonable option, I wouldn't hesitate paying 3K for a "perfect" bed. I was lucky, it was 10 minutes away. Guy responded to my fishing Craigslist.

Re: How much should a swb bed cost

I just paid $700 for some rust free short fleet sides. They have a couple of dents down low, but are overall pretty nice.
I figure it's about $1k for new ones with tax if I get them thru our local shop supplier. And shipping can be expensive if you have to go that route.

No cheap way around it for anything short fleetside. It's not the 90s anymore, when these trucks weren't so collectible.
