driver side wiring by battery? 71

got a 71 that someone has done some special stuff to. trying to figure out how the wiring is supposed to be over by the battery and the junction block. the wire comin over to feed the junction block has a metal tab in the middle of it, that looks like it is supposed to be on a stud, but its black taped up. anyone got a pic of that area on their truck? not even sure what to search!

Someone has evidently replaced the fuseable link wire with a regular wire at some time, or spliced the original wire. The only wires that should be connected to the junction block are a 12 ga Red power wire, the black 16 ga fuseable link wire from the battery, and an 18 ga black wire with a 4 amp inline fuse in it for the amp gauge, it goes directly to the firewall connector..

That is messed up. Not sure what the connector is. The brown wire looks to be to big to be a fusible link but not sure. Someone has cut the 4 amp fuse out of the small black wire and used the Red splice connector to tie the wires back together. The wire that goes to the battery should be the fusible link, not a plain wire....

I've bought black/brown 16 ga fuseable link wires from my local big box parts store (Advan** Auto) Mine was a hod-podge too.

Here is a link to the wiring diagrams.

Underneath the small ones there is a link to larger ones. Just be careful, the windshield wiper wiring is wrong on them.

Here is the engine bay wiring with the fender junction on the top.
Doc is right about the wiper wiring on the diagram but your harness
is most likely OK.

The fusible link is rated at 16 gauge 30 amp.
The lower red wire in your pic is the battery charging wire from the alternator, regulator, cab, junction, and it is 12 gauge.
If you have the gauge dash, you will have the small 18 gauge black wire for the battery charge indicator with the funny shaped fuse holder. If you have the light warning dash you will not have that wire and fuse holder.
