Thoughts on Strongway engine stands?

I'll be working on a 402 BBC. I hear they weigh 650-700ish, and figure a 1500 lb. stand must be real good. I like how it folds up, because space is a premium. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...0940_200640940

I can get the 2000 lb. version for another $40ish. Doesn't fold up.

Shipping works out to be free on either. I'm leaning to the 1500 lb. stand, but thought to ask board opinion(s). Thank you.

Re: Thoughts on Strongway engine stands?

I just finished building a 454 on a 1500 lb stand and I could tell the stand was stressed some. I couldn't imagine another 700 + lbs on it. Not the brand you are looking at though

Good to know, thank you. Turns out they get you for shipping on the Strongways after all.

Currently looking into a Orion Motor Tech 2000 LBS Foldable instead. It's cheaper too.

Re: Thoughts on Strongway engine stands?

Just finished my 454 on a stand just like the one you pictured. I wasnt too concerned with most of the parts on the stand except where the tube welded into the vertical plate. Concerned enough that I put a bottle jack under the front pan area when I put the heads on!

Re: Thoughts on Strongway engine stands?

They are all steel and welds, no matter who makes them. Check the welds. I use whatever Northern Hydraulics was selling 25 years ago, non-folding. It has had 6.5 diesels, big blocks, and has had a small block hanging on it for years. The thing that always concerns me, other than quality of welds, with any engine stand is the darned nuts and bolts fastening the engine to the stand. That;s a hunk of weight pulling down on those poor little things.
