Thanks for the link. Pretty cool that they were the first to have that system and everything now is is pretty much based on it.

Yep, just another work truck. Neat to see them still out being used though.

Today I took a trip to Granite Falls, which is a nice drive. The last 20 miles or so going into town there is along the Minnesota River and scenic. I'll get to that later. Anyway, a town along the way is Morgan, just 10 miles or so NW of here. Right as you get into town is a construction company that has piles of old stuff around. Today I drove through and got to talk to the owner for a few minutes.

Piles of more old junk.

Thresher...

Thats all stuff you can see from the road as you drive by. They kinda made a fence using this old equipment. Back behind the buildings and sheds is some pretty cool stuff though. Case tractor...

More tractors...

Grader...

Pretty slick looking Plymouth I think...

I'm guessing this is late 50's Dodge Coronet...

It's a Texan...

Mack Daddy...

Would this be considered a square body version 1.0?

Spare cowl...

Stude and a Chevy...

GMC with guard kitty cat...

Probably one of the oldest Chevy trucks I've ever seen. It has been sitting in this shop a loooong time. There was a bunch of old tools and equipment in here. Looked like a repair shop that was just abandoned and left as is...

This is my last pic from this place and yes, it is just a fender. But I got a story about this fender. The owner and his brother (who recently passed away) were driving the 51 Studebaker this fender was attached to many years ago. They were at a job site and 1 of their equipment drivers backed over it with a Cat dozer that weighed about 30 tons. He said it pushed the radiator down a little, and pushed the air filter down a little, and you could see the track marks over the hood and top of the car, but he and his brother drove it home. They got stopped by the po-po and ticketed for the damage. When they went to court the judge knew him by his nickname and said "you boys are doing work for the county right?" They said yessir and got fined for the ticket. He said the judge didn't notice the rest of the citations written on the back of the ticket until he had already gave them the fine and sent them on their way.

The same car was hit again by the same driver on the same Cat into the side of it.

I asked if that fender was all that was left and he said "I think the hood is around here someplace."

After that story he told me about the 1950 Studebaker Champ he bought brand new for $1800 and still has in a garage somewhere. I didn't get to see it. I had to get back on the road but he invited me to stop in again.

One more story from him. He grew up on a farm here and his grandfather actually started the business with several steam engines he used for husking corn and milling, sawing, etc. to supplement the farm income. His parents expanded the business into construction and heavy equipment. So he grew up around the stuff. He was drafted into the army during the Korean war. He was going to be a heavy equipment operator and was at the army school for that. His name was at the top of the list so he was the 1st one to have to try using some old bucket digger or something. Cable operated and he said they can be real tricky to operate and not get the cables twisted up like fish line on a reel. So he gets in and runs it like he has been doing it all his life. Because he had been. The Gunny sergeant (Seabee school) was yelling at him to get out and that he needed instructors more than he needed another operator so he became a heavy equipment instructor that day and never had to go to Korea. The 1950 Stude was the car he bought when he was in the army and that he made several trips from both coasts back to MN while he was in the service, hauling his buddies around. He put 160,000 miles of hard use on that car.

Good for him.

So I got headed back down the road to Granite Falls. There is a historical society museum there. I didn't go in, but I thought this was pretty cool.

Classic rock \m/ \m/

The sign nearby said that there was some possibly older rock exposed recently in Greenland. Probably exposed from the global warming. They are not claiming its the oldest rock, just the oldest exposed stuff. You can find older stuff digging down and under the ice I suppose.

The river bank. The lines are just the changes in water depth of the river. I thought the rock bank was pretty neat.

On the way home I went through Redwood Falls and saw a couple of things for sale at a lot there. A 32 Nash...(it was marked as already sold)

I like the Oh $%&* handle...

Then this old Chevy truck was pretty nice. I don't think it was $15,000 nice, but I'm no expert on these things. AZ truck. I don't really care for the body matched painted grill and bumpers, but to each his own.

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff

Cool, because I got a bunch more. Today I went north a little bit, 1st to Litchfield to a junkyard (Now labeled a recycler). They don't really let sell parts so much as tear them sound and sell most as scrap. But there are still plenty of cars rolling through and if you ask, probably for sale.

Out front was an early 70's Mach 1 that didn't seem too bad.

Anyone else share my opinion that the ass end of these looks better than the front? I like big butts...

Next to it was an old charger, big block car.

A huge old lead sled...

Some rusted out Ford Country Sedan wagon that is too far gone for anything but scrap...

Wasn't a lot left of this one...

There were a couple more fords. A COE and a fairly decent pick up...

A pair of Chevy 6400's

And last but not least a 72 GMC K-2500. Pretty far gone but there were some usable parts there. It'll end up on the recycling pile soon enough...

While I was stuffing my pie hole (Taco tuesday) I saw this across the street. It was parked by an army surplus store and I think they are going for that kind of theme with this one...

I got back down the road to get my work done. I had an eventual stop in Annandale which is where French Lake Auto Parts is.

It's like that Gaines place I just posted a few days ago but more well known and better organized. I've been there a few times and never leave empty handed. The prices are sometimes high (like today) but sometimes I get great deals too. Overall I won't complain because the options for yards like this are few and far between. I had to get a few things for finishing the heater in the Jimmy. And I wanted to see what else was on hand and take some pics of some areas I hadn't wandered into before.

When you pull in to the parking lot they have a used car lot on your left and usually in the lot to the right is where the "cool" stuff for sale sits. Not a lot there this time, but the 442 convertible was the shining star of the day. I would not mind cruising that one bit.

The wagon behind it would make a great low and slow cruiser too. I can imagine a road trip in that beast with an LS swap and overdrive tranny. Then I went through the office and out to the yard to look around. First area is tires, right behind the office and I always look. There was an almost new set of BFG A/T's but already sold , and they usually have some pretty good wheel sets too but nothing caught my attention today. Behind the tire are they have some more cars for sale. These are parts cars but I believe they have titles. They usually don't run, they are usually in pretty rough shape, but to a guy looking for a project you might see something you gotta have. I saw a few that would make sweet projects. Like this Riviera...

And this 1 too...

There is a whole row of these kinds of cars...

And to the south is another group of cars for sale...

A few Minx's, here's one...

Some MG's, both have titles and can be had for $500 for the pair...

Just take them and do what Frizzle has done and drop a hot 4 banger in them and drive them like a rental. That black Minx convertible might be somewhat rare. I don't know though. Maybe not.

A couple Chevy corvair based trucks...

It was cold, drizzly and sleeting off and on. I'm an hour and a half from home. It's getting late in the afternoon, so I need to get up to the GM truck hill and get what I came for.

They have a good selection...

I got what I came for but I need to go up the hill and see what's on the west side of it. I've never taken the time to look before. Pretty sweet views of some old iron...

The old old stuff...

I think this is a Kaiser. Gotta dig the hood scoop...

Nash Ambassadors I think...

Rows and rows of classics that are ripe for picking...

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff

I remember yards like these "back in the day!" In central Florida, back in the early 80's, there was one across the Banana River from Cocoa Beach that was full of 40-70's vehicles… I had a 66 Impala that caused me to find that yard, sure wish I would have thought to take pics…

Thanks again for taking the time to document your travels, TOO COOL!!!

Any Minx is rare in this country. Drop tops even more so. Yet they are still not worth much They were nothing special when new, and now they are not well known and therefore don't have much of a following.

Those two MG's would make a great project ...and those suburbans!

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff

Friday I was back in the cities looking around. I had to inspect some air tanks at a place that distributes steel in the area. Steel from the mills is sent out in large plates or in rolls on the thinner sheet. The steel processors then cut the plates to the size their customers want and ship them out. These places are the middle man between the mills and the manufacturer or end user.

The coils or rolls are put into a machine that unrolls it and makes it flat plate. I don't know the exact thickness limit on the roll steel but it's stout stuff. *edit* I looked it up and the rolls are typically 1/4" thick steel or less. Anything thicker than that would be shipped to this location as flat plate.

Some of these places will do a lot of forming and stamping too. I do one place that will cut to dimension, stamp holes in the piece, etc. So it's delivered to the customer ready to roll or brake into shape.

First view is looking down through a receiving area. Those plates are pretty long pieces. I apologize for the poor pic quality. I was moving along pretty well at the time.

These plates are probably about as thick as the 2x4s you see there. They have already been cut to this size. I believe they said the thickest stuff they normally see is about 6" thick.

Here are the rolls ready to be unrolled and cut into flat plate.

Later I stopped to check the progress of another D type watertube boiler that was being re-tubed. The main generating bank was almost done. Just need to put in the D tubes that wrap around to the other side and re-work the refractory block on the front wall.

Last couple pics are from later that day. I looked at a small heating boiler at a clinic and when I came out this firetruck was on the street across from my car.

I know, it's a firetruck, but what caught my eye was their logo. Pretty sweet if you ask me.

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff

Wow, where to start? That junkyard is fantastic, a big old playground to me. You'd go to at least 8-9 yards around here to find 10 67-72s, there's many that caught my eye, especially the old stuff, I could do half a page on naming them all easy. But the 2 Corvair side-ramp trucks-pretty rare to begin with, and there's 2, painted the same, and not picked to pieces? Goldmine!

Going back even further, you really know where to find the cool old stuff around the area, cool old tractors, construction equipment, a Roadrunner, 67ish Charger, Mach 1 and I agree, one of the best looking (metal) rear ends ever, and I've never seen a Dodge Coronet Texan before.

Then the steel: I'm having a hard time picturing even 1/2" steel being rolled up like that, much less 6", not doubting your word, just would love to see what it takes to roll it, and especially what it takes to unroll it and get it back to flat plate.

Always like seeing the guts of a boiler, thanks for sharing your interest and knowledge.

Now the fire truck- I caught the SPFD on top pretty quick, after really looking I see Saint Paul on the door to confirm my suspicions. Bad ass frog, but where does "Frogtown" come in to it? Not being from there, you're gonna have to elaborate for me.

I am quite a ways north of St. Paul so I didn't know what "Frogtown" meant either.
Here is a pretty detailed description I found of "Frogtown".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frogtown

This thread is very neat by the way. I like seeing all of the stuff you find during your travels.

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff

The rolls of steel are for thin stuff. Around 3/8" or less. Thicker plate is shipped as you would expect. When I said they get 6" plate in that was not in roll form. There are lots of reasons u wouldn't roll and unroll thicker material but Mainly its that you stretch the outer side of the steel and compress the inner which adds a lot of stress to the steel. The thicker it is the more this happens.

Frogtown is in the Midway area between St Paul and Minneapolis. Technically a St Paul neighborhood. There is an outstanding farmers market on the east end. It's a mostly Hmong area now.

I'm glad there are several people following along on my travels. Was on the road yesterday and got home tonight but don't have much to share. A few scenic pics. Didn't have much spare time. It was a 3.5 hour drive from Caledonia in the extreme SE corner of the state with snow moving in so I didn't linger.

Here's 1 pic from last night. I was heading east.

If u mean the straps holding them in roll form, I don't think they spring much. Now the straps holding them to the trailer, might be harry if the chocks shifted. They have picture posted in the shipping/receiving office showing a roll of steel the full width of the trailer that was dropped while unloading. The overhead crane busted the cable and dropped a few feet off center of the trailer. It was a twisted wreck. You could see the broken cable end in the photo.

While I'm posting I might as well get another pic loaded. This was a few minutes earlier. Love the sunsets but not at freakin 5:00. Stupid daylight savings.
