Set aside the big/better, need to brag, one-upness, machismo, need to compensate for other short comings, etc, and you will find a motor that runs longer, moves a truck right along just fine, and gets fuel economy a 350 can't touch. I've heard the same about never rebuild a 307. Well, I did and it was a memorable motor. I gave it added pep, didn't hurt/maybe helped fuel economy, sounded great (got comments all the time). Yeah I probably ended up with stock 350 power, but I enjoyed the build, how it wound out, and 13 mpg in a '71 K/20 with 4.57s,37/14.50 rubber, utility bed full of tools, materials in the bed, and ladders/scaffold on the racks. I always wanted to try that motor in a shortbed 2wd.

Re: Funny truck stuff from the board members

I rebuilt the 305 that was in my '85 Pontiac Parisienne wagon and stuffed it in my '68 Skylark. With the 700 trans, I got 18.5 MPG in rush hour traffic. That low first gear made it a great hole shot car, even with the 2.73 axle. I put in a little Edelbrock cam and added a 600 CFM carb and the smallest cam Edelbrock sells. It really could have used a 3.42 or so axle, though. I sold it and the guy who bought did that.

My father bought a new El Camino in 1968 that had the 307, it was a damn good motor. They were an under square motor, 283 block with a 327 crank which made them quite torquey for a 2 barreled carb engine.

1968 - 1971 with 2 Barrel Carb
Max Brake Horsepower: 200 @ 5800 rpm
Max Torque: 300 @ 4200 rpm
Stroke: 3.25
Bore: 3.875
Compression: 9.00
Firing Order: 18436572

Never drive back home from having a BIL push you and your car to get it started some 5 miles for the rotor you thought you left ,,when all the time it was in your shirt pocket

For what it is worth a 307 is an over square engine, 3.875 bore x 3.25 stroke.
a 307 is basically a factory built 283 stroker.
My brothers and I had alot of fun "racing" a built 307 we put in a 62 Chevy II.

A much better engine than the tiny piston, tiny valve and 350 stroke = 305 smog motor

Yea for sure, I’ve had a few 305’s and never been a fan of a single one of them. Between cracked heads and no torque they arent my favorite. The only one I’ve ever been somewhat satisfied with was a buddy’s vortec 305 in a 97 regular cab short bed, the vortec heads helped it for sure but not enough that I’d want one.
I don’t have any experience with the 307 but I’ve heard decent things about it. I like the 283’s a lot, revving little bastards they are, and the 327’s aren’t much different. There love child can’t be too bad... A de-stroked bigger bore engine like the 302 or 307 is a great combo for high rpms. A small bore longer stroke not so much, especially with weak heads.

I was designing a piece of equipment that would absorb the radio frequency energy from a transmitter, many years ago. I got all the parts lined up, and then flipped them around to check the model for clearances, and sent the drawing to manufacturing. All the parts came back, and it didn't go together, because I had flipped the model around. Luckily, I was able to use a few parts off the shelf to make my design work. About $1000, which is chump-change in the defense biz. Pretty embarrassing, anyway. Magic fingers can still miss the target.

You do that too?? Sorry to say this, but your shortcoming sure makes me feel better about myself

I had a 307 wear the fiber timing gear out. I had a new dbl roller for it looking for time to install when it jumped. Ended up with bent valves, 120k on the motor. That's the one I rebuilt. Minimal machining required. The crank was micro-polish ready, no cylinder ridge, and they only needed a light hone for hatch marks. Everyone was impressed with how little wear that engine showed.

LOL. Just a thought, someone spent many hours looking for a part off a frame-off and searched everywhere, came up empty. Turns out it was right next to this computer

Can't tell you how many times I've looked for a part, and the last place looked was literally the last place possible.

From another board just now..

Re: Funny truck stuff from the board members

Someone here has a quote in their signature that I've always liked: If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!

Gregski has a build thread for the truck he just sold named Rusty. He was in the middle of working on something and had to choose how to proceed. As always, there were a few options including spending more time and money. He made his choice and knew that some people would not agree. He didn't take issue with them, but simply and humbly said "I plan on regretting this later."

Neat alright. But where do you get the GOOD zip ties? The ones I have won't hold up long enough to walk away from them before they break much less use them close to a hot engine. I'm talkin cheap.

I hear you. The last couple of bunches that I got were complete garbage. I would gladly pay a little more for something that actually works.

It's like Ziploc plastic bags. I always buy the best because the cheap ones will leak and make a mess in the fridge.

The cheap stuff doesn't save you any money.

I've been happy with the commercial electric zip ties that I've been using on my truck for a couple years now. I really like the small ones for wiring stuff
