Mud and Brakes

Wasn't sure where to post this:

I've just finished painting my frame and moving to the rear axle. I have about 2" of caked mud/dirt all over the backing plate. I have the axle cleaned and sanded but not sure how to get this caked mud off. Any ideas?

Also curious, I am on a tight budget... is it necessary to replace my drums when rebuilding the brakes? the truck is a 1967 and its been sitting for about 10+ years.

Is there anything else I need to do to the rear axle before calling it done?

Re: Mud and Brakes

drums can be turned and if you rebuild them you should at the least have them turned.

Re: Mud and Brakes

I've tried oven cleaner and a high pressure hose. it worked pretty well but i still needed to go over everything with an angle grinder. The backing plates aren't the easiest to get to with one.
