Can anyone give me tips to rebuild my own carb?

I have a Rochester Monojet. I bought a kit and float from NAPA. Is this something a novice can handle? How do I go about it?

Follow the instructions that came with the kit. There will be parts left over since the kits usually cover several versions of the mono jet.Clean everything very well.I like to use a piece of clean newsprint or butcher paper to do it on so I can see the parts better.Make sure to take pictures of the linkages so you get them back like they belong.Take your time and be thourough.I always read the instructions thru 2-3 times before starting. They aren't hard but do require that you pay attention.

To add on what PanelDeland said, you probably want to consider giving the body of the carb an acid bath to completely clean out the little passages in the carb. A gallon of carb cleaning acid only runs about $25 which to me is worth not have to redo the job (I learned that on my first carb rebuild).

The monojet is pretty easy to o-haul. Make sure you use the right gasket between the throttle body & fuel bowl & it is on in the right direction. Study the directions for the metering rod adjustment & float level. These are critical adjustments. Make sure the link from the throttle shaft to the metering rod holder stays in the hole. Sometimes you have to bend it in a little.

I use the carb cleaner and long red nozzle sprayer and use it to spray out the passages

A great tool to use for cleaning orifices is a gas welding tip-cleaner--about 5 bucks & will last thru countless rebuilds. Link to one below.

Re: Can anyone give me tips to rebuild my own carb?

There are some really good videos on you tube. I just rebuilt my mono jet and the videos made it super easy. I soaked my carb in WD-40 rust penetrator for 4 days. Came out looking brand new. The square float bowl design has a check valve for the accelerator pump circuit. There will be several new check balls in the kit just keep track of the size. I have two mono jets and one of them the accelerator pump check would not come out.... Now its for parts.

i use berryman carb/parts cleaner, its $18 a gallon at walmart & around $25 at most autoparts stores.

when your spaying any type of carb cleaner or blowing out passages with compressed air wear safety glasses, i've had carb cleaner blown in my eyes way to many times to remember

Re: Can anyone give me tips to rebuild my own carb?

X10 or whatever above. Very doable for a first timer. Rebuilt my first Monojet not long ago, took a lot of pics, followed the the instructions closely, cleaned everything REALLY well, measured twice (cut once!) and reassembled. Remember to go back and retighten the bolts holding it down to the intake after a few spins. Gave the ole' girl new legs like I couldn't believe, so worth the effort!!
