Anyone got a link to info on a 230/250/292 install?

Well originally I wanted to SBC it because of ease of parts, but then decided I wanted to keep it somewhat original. Then I found out the 235 was frozen up and may not be worth fixing when other motors are so easy to come by. I figure a good 230/250/292 (especially a 292) is a good compromise between staying inline 6 for cool factor and not having to deal with modifying the steering setup...especially since people in the South East are practically giving away these later inline 6s in perfect running condition.

Does anyone have a build thread on their run ins on installing one of the later inline 6s to the AD trucks or maybe a step-by-step FAQ of some sort? I've seen a few threads on the install but thought I'd post this and maybe I could get some info from other guys who haven't necessarily posted threads about it.

I hate to ask so many "newb" questions but I gotta augment my searching and learning somehow.

Re: Anyone got a link to info on a 230/250/292 install?

i got everything set to put a 250 from a 65 in my 53. i think i will be able to start on it in the next few weeks. i am using the stock 3 speed so i had to find a bell housing and clutch plate that meshed up properly. the biggest issues you will run into that i have prepared for is: column shift linkage will have to be reworked or replaced with a floor shifter, throttle linkage will not interchange directly and needs to be reworked. i might run into an issue with the fan clearing the radiator and if so i will be loosing the fan and putting in an electric fan. i will be posting up pics of the whole swap process when i start on it.

Re: Anyone got a link to info on a 230/250/292 install?

Well that doesn't sound too bad. I'm already re-wiring the truck with a Rebel wire 9+3 system as I've seen some guys mention wiring is an issue. I want a floor shifter anyways, even if I find a good 235/261 to put in, so that issue is covered. I already figured I'd have to do some throttle cable work as I wouldn't be using a single carb even if once again I find a good 235/261, so I guess that's not really an issue either. The truck will definitely be getting electric fans, so I guess that doesn't matter either.

The only thing I guess I'll need real help on is what mounts do I use and how will they connect to the 54 truck frame, and then I recall reading a guy mention a crossmember needs to be put under the bellhousing or something like that. After that, I guess it's just the clutch.

Let me know what you find out on what clutch kit works for you and I'll just steal your idea. I may even just upgrade to a 4 speed transmission like a Saginaw.

Re: Anyone got a link to info on a 230/250/292 install?

on the wiring issue, i already converted my truck over to 12v in preparation for the swap. essentially it should just be plug and play now when i get the new engine in.

on the clutch issue, there is a shop in oklahoma city that i am getting a clutch plate from. i am going to take the plate from the 250 and the plate from the 216 up there and he is going to make me a plate with the 216 center and the 250 friction outer part. it will fit the input shaft on the original transmission and the flywheel from the 250 then.

for the engine mounts, i am using chassis engineering inc part number cp1160

i cant find the original place i bought em at but this is essentially the same thing. just make sure you get one that fits the bolt pattern on your block.

Re: Anyone got a link to info on a 230/250/292 install?

If you are running a standard trans and use the cast iron V8 bellhousing (55--???) it allows you to mount the bellhousing to the stock crossmember and that will locate the engine quite well. From there it is level the engine and either build or install new side mounts. Someone on here showed some nice mounts that they built that come straight out from the side of the block and use a biscuit style rubber mount. Very clean and simple.
The side mounts I currently have on the 250 in the 48 are such a scabbed up mess that I wouldn't show them to anyone even as a bad example. But that was a go from a bare frame to a driving truck in two weeks deal and it was supposed to come back apart a couple of months later and that was 21 years ago this August.

I dug in my pictures and here is a shot of a mount on a 250 (could be a 194 or 230) that someone posted on the net and I really liked.
Simple and clean and it uses a flathead Ford style motormount biscuit setup that is easy to get.

Note that on a 194/230/250 the motor mounts are straight across and the right side mount is behind the fuel pump. On a 292 they are staggered a bit and the mount is in front of the fuel pump.

Re: Anyone got a link to info on a 230/250/292 install?

Thanks for the help guys, but finally got some good info on moving the box outside the frame so I can SBC it and keep it centered up. I'd love to keep an inline 6 but it's just too hard to find a variety of parts for. Going to use Speedway's kit and use a non power box as I don't want the pump and lines cluttering up the engine bay.

Think you can share the info/link you have found for the steering box relocation? I know I have been doing alot of research for all the modifications needed for a SBC swap and this being a main one, any additional info is helpful. I am sure it will help others following this thread as well.

Thanks
