68 C10 build thread...kinda.

I was always a lurker around here and finally signed on when I got my baby last summer. I never did post a build thread. I honestly don’t have much I want to do with the truck because it was pretty much perfect in my opinion when I bought it. But I’ve changed a few things on her and plan to change a few things more.

The specs on her are: basically all original, even has the dealer bumper that says “Campbell Chevrolet Company, Morillton Arkansas” if anyone has any info on that dealership please tell me. factory drivetrain, 307, SM465 4-speed, and 12 bolt 4.11 rear end. 75,000 original miles. Basically a no options truck except for the side trim. Glove box tag is completely legible. She is a longbed fleet-side and proud of it! Original paint and patina, with donor fenders and tailgate sometime in the past. It has a 4” and 6” drop, 2 inch drop spindles and 2 inch springs in the front and 6 inch springs in the rear.. And Corvette style rallys, 15x8 on the front and 15x10 on the rear sporting 255/60/15 front and 275/60/15 on the rear. The previous owner added a 4 barrel carburetor, original style power steering pump, and disk brakes with the drop spindles.

Pictures of the very first day I saw her for sale along route 68 in between Ravenswood and Parkersburg on June 6th 2017. I purchased her 3 days later, would’ve been sooner if I could’ve got the money together faster haha.

Re: 68 C10 build thread...kinda.

Of course the second day I had her the classic door handle button tab breakage happened. I had no idea what the heck was going on until I disassembled it. I didn’t want to buy a shiny new door handle, it just wouldn’t look right. So my dad and I can up with a work around involving rivets and a piece of S10 sheet metal haha. Works great still to this day.

Thanks man. I was just reading through your thread yesterday. You’ve done so much to that truck. Your truck is still in my top 5 favorite trucks I’ve ever seen.

Re: 68 C10 build thread...kinda.

The second week I had her I did a few small things. Put the original style Trico wiper blades on, the previous owner had new cheap wiper blades, one without an adapter so it would turn sideways when you turned them on haha.

Next I fixed the reverse lights, I believe it still had the original bulbs in it. Someone had a fuse that was way too low an amperage rating. The glass twisted out of the base and I had to tear the base out in pieces. Put new ones in and they worked right away, I was lucky the socket itself hadn’t rusted.

I also went ahead and wired up the marker lights, I know 68 didn’t originally have them but I figured “What the heck? The sockets are there.” I am going to change them back to the original solid ones someday though.

And lastly I fixed the horn, I started tracing wires to find what was wrong, I figured whoever put the Camaro steering wheel it it didn’t wire it up. Turns out it was just unplugged under the dash. It was turned sideways and only one prong was plugged in. Plugged it in and the factory horn still worked. A day or so later I installed a oohga horn haha. I painted it flat black and tucked it away out of sight. I wired it up so there was no modification to the original wiring. Always gets smiles out of everyone.

Re: 68 C10 build thread...kinda.

The next thing I did was change the oil and put some new valve cover gaskets on, the old cork ones were hard as a rock and stuck pretty bad, and put on a new air filter.

Then I cleaned up the engine bay. It took hours to degrease it. Even the valve covers had a ton of grease on them. There is still, and I’m not even exaggerating, a solid inch of crud caked on the transmission, including grease covered mud dobber nests haha. Hey, free undercoating right?

Here’s a before and a couple afters. It’s hard to tell to tell how bad it was in the first picture. I couldn’t believe how good the paint was still on the valve covers, heads and block. And that is after me scraping them with a metal gasket scraper for hours. I wish whoever put the 4 barrel on would’ve painted the manifold while they had it off.

A picture I took of the no options interior a month or so after I got her. And the little doo-dads I added to personalize it. I also put some decals in the back glass and gave them some “age”. The same on both sides.

Thanks a lot man. I love her just the way she is. I did give her a CLR bath though. That cleaned her up quite a bit without getting rid of the “patina”. I may post pictures of that tonight.

Re: 68 C10 build thread...kinda.

The next thing I did was add a super custom coolant overflow “jug” haha. Not that it was really needed but I didn’t like the idea of antifreeze spewing on the ground if it ever did overflow, we have dogs. Plus to me it seemed kinda nostalgic to have a old glass pop bottle as an overflow.
The first one I rigged up was a Fanta bottle, it stayed on there for a few months and then my uncle gave me these cool, really old bottles that say Covert Bottling Company. I just think they’re awesome looking so I swapped the Fanta out for one of them. If you look real fast it looks like it says Chevrolet haha.

Re: 68 C10 build thread...kinda.

That almost brings us up to current time. Everything from here on out has been done within the past few days.

Last week Dad and I got the bumper off and started prepping it for paint. I never did like the black stripe on top of the bumper. But as Dad was sanding it we noticed some filler work that was starting to come off, I guess somebody had cut the bolt heads off to get the bumper off, I wish they had never taken it off. It probably looked great as it was.
Anyways Dad bondo’d the cut marks correctly and painted the bumper. He gave it some black faded looking spots by spraying the black over the argent silver while it was still wet. Then cleared it with flat clear. I think it turned out great, and really original looking.
And of course I added a classic style USA-1 plate, with actual old school chrome license plate bolts.

Hey man nice truck, the patina is beautiful on it and you'll love driving it like that. Not having to worry about bumps, dings or scratches. Just drive and enjoy as I do with my factory painted 67 long bed small window.

Thanks a lot. And I know exactly what you mean. I almost hate to paint the Camaro once we get done with it because of worrying about it. I still park the the C10 at the end of the parking lot though, it helps protect her, and I can use the exercise haha.
Just the other day I gave her a CLR bath and I think she looks even better now. I’m going to post some pics of that in a minute.
And that’s a nice truck man, I love the small windows.

Re: 68 C10 build thread...kinda.

While the paint was drying on the bumper I went ahead and pulled her out of the garage and gave her a CLR bath in the driveway. I couldn’t believe the results. I am going to have to go over the hood with a non scratching scotch brite and some soap and water though because the places I rubbed are now shinier than the rest of the hood.
Here’s some before and after pics:

Re: 68 C10 build thread...kinda.

A couple days ago I finally got rid of the crappy plastic air cleaner spacer and put on a Allstar aluminum spacer with the o-ring seal, For some reason the air cleaner baseplate didn't fit in the groove on top, had to made a relief cut and taper it, but its on there good now and my air cleaner is finally straight. And I replaced the old distributor cap and rotor (said made in the USA so had to be old haha) with a new Accel cap and rotor. Accel superstock wires are going on next.

Thanks! I don't know why everybody wants a shortbed, I mean I like them, but I like longbeds better because no one seems to want them.
Love the Burb by the way.

I'll be following a thread thinking...yeah, this is turning out nice. Then the bed gets cut and I lose most of my interest in the build. Don't get me wrong, I like shortbeds too, but if they all look the same it gets a bit cookie cutter.

Yeah exactly! I shed a tear every time something gets cut that's original. It can never be put back original, it can be reconverted, but it will never be original again. Plus a longbed is just more useful.
You get it, after all a Suburban is just a longbed with a hat
Like your signature by the way.
