Which springs?

I am rebuilding the front end of my 84 Silverado c10 and thought about buying new HD (Moog 6454) springs instead of the standard LD (moog 6452) springs. Has anyone here done this? If so did it level out a bit and how was the ride? I have the 7+1 rear spring pack but with 1 inch rotors up front.

Re: Which springs?

So you have a light duty 1/2 ton (1" rotors) that has 3/4 ton springs in the back (should have had 3+1 or maybe 4+1 pack). Are you trying to make this a 3/4 ton? Because you don't have the frame or braking to manage constant heavy loading.
To answer your question, they should drop in, they will raise the front 1-2" depending on what spring is in it now, unless this has a 454 with A/C in which chase you probably wouldn't have those brakes. You will need an alignment after. You can also cut a coil to get back towards the stock ride height, and stiffer handling.

If you look at Rob's handling thread these springs are what he recommends to stiffen the handlig, albeit with cut coils.

Re: Which springs?

I am not trying to build a 3/4 ton. I was told when I bought the truck that it had the HD spring package (7+1) in the rear for towing his boat. The only other thing I have discovered about the truck that might go along with that is it's gov. lock rear. It has a pretty good rake from back to front and in course of rebuilding the front suspension I wanted to lift the front a bit to reduce the rake some. Looking at the specs on the different springs for the front they both state same installed height, the lighter spring has a slightly longer relaxed length and the heaver spring has a thicker wire. I figured either new spring would raise the front a bit, but was more concerned with ride hashness of the heavier spring.

Re: Which springs?

A true towing special would have had the big brakes too. More likely someone swapped in the 3/4 springs. Or, it may be a 3/4 that someone replaced the front hubs on. Does it have a 10 bolt rear? That would be a 1/2 ton.
My 87 is a diesel with the heavy brake package, 3,08 10 bolt w/gov-lock and 5 spring rear.
The stiffer springs should lift you up a bit, i'm going to guess 1" minimum. Ride will be noticeably harsher - my light 3/4 rides harsh not firm. Good shocks will help with that a bit.

Re: Which springs?

I have the Moog 6454 springs and Bilstein shocks. The ride is extremely harsh on bad roads, so much so that i'm trying the 6452 springs to see if I can get a more compliant ride. It does corner good with those stiff springs on good pavement.
