Re: Power Window Project DIY 64-66 TRUCK

Instead of buying the two different window motors, can't you use the piece of the 64-66 window regulator that you cut off that supported the manual gear and was the guide for the sector?

Re: Power Window Project DIY 64-66 TRUCK

I don't think so. The spacer / bracket does several things. The motor has no place to mount to regulator. Also the motor needs to be 90 degrees to regulator. The gear needs to spaced away from sector. The bracket magically does these things.

Here is another way to look at it; if o told uou a bracket makes it very easy to mount motor and was only $20, would you buy it?

Anything can be fabricated...what is your time worth? Once i had correct parts it took 20 minutes.

Re: Power Window Project DIY 64-66 TRUCK

Steve
I ordered one of each of those assemblies and will see how the gear pitch on the teeth are. Will post for you what I find I should have both by next tuesday which is my day off. That motor appears to use the same connector as before
Sean

Steve an update on that motor I ordered is out of a Chevy cavalier (1988-2005 models). So That might be another option for securing those plates? probably 3 bucks at a local picknpull as those are like dimes a dozen a yard lol. They depending on where you go run about 22-33$. I will be able to look at it Monday after I get home from a weekend trip and give you a verdict on it. The second item I have one coming in to look at and see if it is another viable option as well. I will have that one Tuesday

Re: Power Window Project DIY 64-66 TRUCK

I am worried we are losing focus of design goals. The idea is to save bunch of money over buying kit from one of the places that makes vintage lifts. right now, if I had reused my old regulator, I would be at $46.97 total per window. that is using Amazon Prime https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-742-15.../dp/B000IZ2YTW and http://www.carparts.com/details/Chev...B&gclsrc=aw.ds . The regulator alone you purchased is $70 without motor.

Re: Power Window Project DIY 64-66 TRUCK

UPDATE as of this AM:

We installed motor with FANTASTIC results! Works like a million bucks! I will be posting youtube video shortly.

Here is a few notes on install; The motor now seems to cause a crash with the wing post installation. As such, I had to drop regulator and glass down into door and let dangle, install wing post in to track without bolts, move regulator up behind wing post, then install glass slide tracks, then bolt everything down. Quite an origami!!! Now here is really bad news- I bought a power window crank switch to use retro handle, it appears it needs to be mounted FIRST!!! that means I will need to tear it all back apart again! I am not ready to do this yet as my next goal is to use parts from old regulator manual handle to make a retro switch of my own.

By the way, installing the new regulator and wing is a 2 person job!!!

Steve understood. On the other piece will not put any more information on it. On the motor I was trying to help you find a source for those plates that won't cost a mint in machining.

Re: Power Window Project DIY 64-66 TRUCK

Sean,

Sourcing help is always welcome! Fresh ideas also. I really am just trying to get away from paying bunch of money to places that are charging a fortune for pairing up OEM parts just like I have just done in this thread.

If you succeed in option that results in better solution at low cost, love to hear about it. If you fail to achieve results or price, then we learned something. I think either way is OK.

FYI-I did confirm, the motor you found is same motor as one I am buying, different vendor, better quality, but still for square body Chevy. Pitch will not fit old regulator. That said, I think the $23 price from Amazon prime is fine if we get bracket and we can always sell motor to square body people...doubt they have to change bracket each time they change motors.

Re: Power Window Project DIY 64-66 TRUCK

OK Guys and Gals, here is link to Youtube showing installed regulator and test. $50 per side. https://youtu.be/bYWVZdToj84 .One more note on install, we did end up putting coil spring back on regulator, as it seemed to be smoother travel with in place. Still not sure if it really needs it, but does not seem to do any harm.

Re: Power Window Project DIY 64-66 TRUCK

I bought the astro van motors, any suggestions on where to get the bracket? Jumped too soon again....

checked Rock Auto , if you order 2 of the dormans, it makes the cost $21.15 per side.....including the freight-----

I called Dorman and they currently do not sell this bracket by itself...ditto with ACI------

Kieth,

I know, its wierd, but u must buy a SECOND motor just to get bracket. https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-742-15.../dp/B000IZ2YTW

The dorman 742-150 comes with bracket but motor does not fit our regulaor so it is a throw away-fortunately it is also on cheap side. Thats why i say this is $50 per side...

Sure- here is summary;

KEEP IN MIND THIS IS NOT SWITCHES FOR CONTROL- ONLY THE POWER WINDOW REGULATOR. I AM WORKING ON RETRO SWITCH CONTROL THAT WOULD USE ORIGINAL WINDOW CRANK AS SWITCH KNOB.

FOR EACH DOOR BUY;

1 each http://www.repairconnector.com/produ...r-1979-up.html THIS IS WIRING PLUG PIGTAIL THAT MATES TO MOTOR

1 each https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-742-15.../dp/B000IZ2YTW THIS PART IS FOR BRACKET ONLY! MOTOR IS NOT USED! SELL IT TO YOUR 78-87 CHEVY SQUARE BODY BUDDIES! BTW, it also comes with bag of screws that you can use to connect bracket to correct Astro motor. Screws are kind of cheesy, may want to go to Ace Hardware and buy better ones, use as size template.

1 each http://www.carparts.com/details/Chev...B&gclsrc=aw.ds
THIS IS CORRECT MOTOR- MUST MATE WITH BRACKET FROM AMAZON.

I will make a video soon on the actual conversion blow by blow on modifying your regulator.

TO RECAP; here is summary of my goals at beginning of project.

GOALS FOR REGULATOR-

1. Must be similar quality as Nu-relics. FEEL I MET THIS GOAL, LOOKS AND FEELS WELL MADE.
2. Should be using off the shelf parts or old OEM parts from truck. FEEL I MET THIS GOAL, USED AFTERMARKET OFF SHELF MOTOR WITH REPRO OR OEM REGULATOR.
3. Must be bolt in, should not have to hack up doors to make it work. FEEL I MET THIS GOAL. THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT TO ME> WHILE A STREET ROD/RESTRO MOD MY TRUCK, I NEVER WANT TO HACK UP MY TRUCK; I SHOULD ALWAYS BE ABLE TO RESTORE BACK TO FACTORY ORIGINAL.
4. Should be low cost. FEEL I MET THIS GOAL. APPROX $50 PER DOOR IF YOU REUSE OLD REGULATOR.

Re: Power Window Project DIY 64-66 TRUCK

NOW ON TO DOOR HANDLES!

Has anyone purchased a set of these they can show insides?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/DOOR-HANDLE...-/222727910374

Or any version? Classic parts appears to have a phonelic set https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=...13234250508972 , Bothers has plastic set, https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=...13234250508972 I have purchased one from here https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=...13234250508972 . I would like to get a better look at inside of all of them, also the good and bad. The one I bought seems to bind, not very smooth. ALso mounting appears to be a 3 set of blind screws that must be drilled and mounted from inside door. I hear some can sheer off since they are not well built.

This project I may need some help with on fabrication and ideas!

Re: Power Window Project DIY 64-66 TRUCK

This next one seems somewhat easy to me. Seems like the hardest part is making it all fit together. Using the stock crank that was removed, should be able to attach 2 arms to it and 2 springs. This way it sits center, but when you push in either direction it will ground out one of the arms, but then spring back to center when you let go.

I'd imagine that is in a nutshell how the linked switches are designed, but trying to figure out in my mind exactly how to make that happen is a bit more complicated. It would be cool to do them in such a way that does not require welding or anything.

What I really like about this so far is that the average guy with limited tools could do it. A grinder/dremel seems like the only special tool needed. No welding skills/equipment required. I hope we....and by that I probably mean you can find a way to keep that up with the switches!

Re: Power Window Project DIY 64-66 TRUCK

Cooper,
Actually looking at how the aftermarket ones are designed using micro switch assemblies it should not be horribly difficult just figuring out the method to activate and spring strength. I almost went that route for myvtap shifter but I found a shifter conversion kit that does it a similar way. Steve seems best price on them switches with all the wire runs 125 bucks. I did find some short switches without the wire for 35 a piece. Pur knurled mount sticks out 1.52 inches from the base.

Re: Power Window Project DIY 64-66 TRUCK

I have ordered a set from EBAY and one from Summit. I will do tear down and post pics.

I think the hardest part may cycle life/the ability to be used 100s of times without fail. It would need good bushings, but also must survive being wrenched on by passengers who do not know is power window handle, think is manual still and break it on accident.
