1970 c10 not starting, no fuel

Hey Guys,
I'm a newcomer so bear with me.

I have a 1970 c10 with a 327 v8 that sat for about 6 months while I changed a leaky steering box. It cranks but does not fire. The carburetor looked dry, so I thought it would be the fuel delivery. I pulled one of the plugs and there is spark so I don't think that is the problem. When I opened the throttle I didn't see any fuel squirting into the carb. I poured a little gas in the carburetor and it fired for a second and then nothing. I bought a can of starting fluid tonight that I will try tomorrow.
I'm thinking blockage in the fuel line, bad carb accelerator pump or bad fuel pump?
What do you guys recommend?
Thanks!

Re: 1970 c10 not starting, no fuel

A line obstruction appearing after 6 months seems unlikely unless the filter itself is gummed up
.
Make sure theres gas in the tank

Pull the line off the carb (or look at the filter if you have a clear one) and turn it over to see if the pump is working

If no, replace.

If yes, move on to the carb. Here's where there could be deposits after 6 months gumming up the works with our fuel additives.

Keep it simple, follow the fuel path, report back with questions / results.

Re: 1970 c10 not starting, no fuel

I used the starting fluid in the carb and it started up fine after a couple tries. I guess maybe the fuel drained back into the tank? Anyways, it runs, but I think the throttle sticks a little and is it sometimes stalls when I go from park to drive.

Short of rebuilding the carb, you can clean it up with some carburetor cleaner. Make sure the choke system is working freely as well as the fast idle cams, sounds like you could have one or both sticking a little.

Well that was short lived. Now the truck wont even turn over. It is making a very loud whining noise. The guy before me put a new starter in it supposedly. Also, I was jump starting it so I don’t think it is the battery.

Could be that the Bendix drive went toes up. How loud is the noise? Like a cat on steroids, or like an annoyed wife? The annoyed wife is not as loud. YMMV

You can have someone try to start it while looking at the starter engagement (wear goggles) and see if the gears engage.

If the starter isn't shimmer right it'll make a heck of a noise. Was it making the noose when you first tried starting it? Stop using starting fluid. If it was turning over and wouldn't after it ran for a while, your starter needs.some work.

Re: 1970 c10 not starting, no fuel

It is making a god awful noise, it sounds almost like a scream👻. I started it with starting fluid m, let ir run for 30 minutes, and moved it to the street. Then it sat for the night and now this is happening.
My Dad told me to bang the starter with a rubber mallet or hammer to see if that works. Thanks for all the quick replies guys it is great to be able to hear your advice.
Is there a way I can check the starter solenoid with a volt meter? or the starter itself even though it may only be a 1 1/2 years old?
Any help is appreciated

Re: 1970 c10 not starting, no fuel

Sounds like the starter is misaligned and needs to be properly shimmed so it will engage with the flywheel properly. The screeching you are hearing is the bendix smacking into the edge of the flywheel and spinning against it, metal to metal because it did not engage gear tooth to gear tooth.

The starter might not be disengaging. The hammer trick might work, could be from sitting and rust or something formed
