Re: 73 gmc short Sierra Grande C1500

Well, I had to get the rear of the truck lowered a little before I could mount the vintage air box under the dash, you need to level it up so it drains correctly. I pulled the box back off and installed 2" shackles. Now the truck sits just how I like them, just a little higher in the rear, but not jacked up looking. Working mostly in the shop at nights, I had to take the time to fab up a box lifting jig for the engine hoist, my buddies will thank me. It turned out good, and seemed to work good! I have had this on the to-do list for awhile. I had to notch the cross member to clear the shackles while I had it up in the air. Now to finish up installing the vintage air....

Looking really good! What size square tubing did you use for the attachment?

It is 1 1/4", and the adjustable ends are 1". I used what I had leftover from building a welding cart, its pretty light tube, but it seemed to work fine.

I did Mike. With this lift jig thing, it is real steady, and easy to control. I will round up some more tubing and make you one, makes it a safe 1 man operation!

Re: 73 gmc short Sierra Grande C1500

My least favorite thing to do is sanding, and buffing! I have been putting off doing the hood and fenders, I only had medium activator, and reducer when I painted them, and needed fast. In an effort to avoid solvent pop issues, I was nervous about laying the clear down slick, and ended up with some orange peel. I made sure to lay an extra coat on since I knew that a sanding session was in my future. A couple buddies stopped by last night, and one of them asked why the back of the truck looks so nice, and the front looks like lizard skin? I guess that was the motivation I needed to get it done.😀

looks great.

what brand hood did you go with? I'm still torn as to whether do a cowl hood or stock hood.

I'm not sure what brand it is, there is a guy kinda local that sells truck parts. He seems to have alot of the same stuff that you can get from any other truck catalog, I don't think there are very many outfits that actually manufacturer parts for these old trucks. Same stuff, different box most of the time.

Re: 73 gmc short Sierra Grande C1500

I got the light harnesses cleaned up, cleaned up and painted the grille, and final installed the front end stuff. I also got the vintage air hoses routed! Had to have a pipe made for the exhaust today, the kit I bought was not set up for a double hump transmission cross member. We are getting pretty close on this one.

Re: 73 gmc short Sierra Grande C1500

Exhaust is all welded up, transmission lines run, brake booster balsted, and painted, new master cylinder painted, installed and new lines made. I didn't have the greatest luck bending the curly-q in the lines, but they will work! I also got the taillight harness run, and the taillights installed, and I got the engine harness today, so I got that installed. I'm hoping to have it moving under it's own power in the next week.

Re: 73 gmc short Sierra Grande C1500

Just been plugging away at getting the wiring hooked up, and nice looking. I bleed the brakes, and I wish I would have spent the half hour, and $25 to build one of these pressure bleeder 10 years ago!!! It made it real obvious when I pumped it up that I didn't tighten up the rear hard line to the rubber line.
