1950 3100 Door Sill Plate and Rubber questions

Hello!
We are at the point of fitting the door sill plates and gasket under the sill plate to the door. I have attached some pictures as well. We have a few questions...
1. How important is the gasket?
2. We have aftermarket billet plates that have a longer drop than the factory steel ones - can this be cut?
3. Is there a different gasket we should be using?
4. it appears there is no way to use both parts as is - am i missing something?

Could that be the seal that goes between the bottom of the cab and side floor board.

The gasket in your hand looks more like the one that goes between the sill and runningboard under the cab. I've often thought it was not needed myself. The one that goes on the sill plate, I don't really see it's purpose other than to hold dirt and moisture.

Thanks for the reply's - I compared the gaskets in the pictures with the ones for between the running board and the cab and they are definitely different.
I had not seen the video you posted JBarron - thanks. I wonder if the 49 is different than the 50? The rusty metal trim piece in the picture is what we removed.
I just know what i have in my hands wont work as is.

Mike, will try to help out a little on your questions.
#1 I didn't use the gasket, because I had a full door panel that goes to the bottom of door. I did use the retainer, which I covered with leather to hold my leather on the floor in place. (See pic)

#2 After market plates would need to be cut down to match the old retainers, so gasket would sit correct.

#3 No you have the correct gasket.

#4 No, not missing anything, just need a visual to help you along.

The U-tube video is for the 48-49 set-up, which is different than the 50-54.

The LMC part page from whitedog76 shows
Item #21 (your gasket)
Item #22 (you old retainer)
Item #24 gasket for what is called runningboard seal.

Here are a few pics., from old 51 sitting outside.

Pic #1 shows the retainer attached to floor with rubber gasket.
Pic #2 shows from the side.
Pic #3 shows retainer and hows it holds the runningboard seal (hole in floor so I was able to get a pic)
Pic #4 old running board seal below cab.
Pic #5 my retainer covered with leather in place.

I guess I was wrong with my initial statement.

The seal is missing from my 54.

What is the point of said gasket?

I installed carpet and pad in my truck and the stock sill plates were too short. You may want to test fit with whatever material you plan to use before cutting the billet sills.

I didn't use the seals you have pictured, just didn't like the look.

It was just another seal to keep dirt from coming in the cab, and if you had a heater to keep heat in the cab...Jim

Jim - Thank you! That is exactly what I needed.
Jweb - I didn't even think about the carpet and pad thickness.

I really don't like the look of the seals either. I was just attempting to get all fitment and drilling done prior to the truck going to the interior shop.

Now I believe it will be best to wait.
