crap mallory dist.

I have a mallory dist. # 8548201 that is pretty crappy, wire sheathing cracked ,terminals fall out, something wrong with centrifugal advance springs or weights. This after 2 installs and went back to my old stock HEI. I was just wondering if this could be rebuilt to better standards as the housing is nice or is it just going to cost more time and effort compared to buying a nice dist. I see some people suggest a GM ZZ 4 dist. Is on a carbed 454 . Maybe I have a nice paper weight

Re: crap mallory dist.

I have about five Skip white distributors with no issues. They are between 5-10 years old now.

Re: crap mallory dist.

At 50 bucks a pop I bought 4 of these and never had any issues. Plus who rebuilds anything these days. This country has become R&R experts with Chinese cheap arse parts to say the least. Buy and toss method.

Re: crap mallory dist.

I ran a Skip White HEI in my 71 for a couple of years without an issue.

On the Mallory, I use to see a lot of them in Texas years ago that the dirt trackers used and wore out after a couple of seasons that ended up in street car guys hands who in turn had trouble with them. They work great new out of the box but the ones back then seemed to have longevity issues. Mostly sloppy bushings. I worked for the guy who set most of them up for local racers at the time.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Re: crap mallory dist.

Have not been impressed with the Mallory brand. Once bought a set of plug wires to replace the "boring" gray stock ones. The boots and looms melted like chocolate. This was in the mid-to-late 1980s. Have not sampled that brand since. Prefer stock stuff.

You should try calling them. They have good service people there.

I received my first Skip White distrib. about 5 years ago DOA. They sent another right away with no requirement to return the bad one.
It lasted a couple years until one day with the temp gauge about 3/4 of the way to the hot zone ( still well within the normal range) it just quit. The replacement is holding up but I bought another as a spare that I keep behind the seat. -BA
