Tachometer mounting location

So y'all with 47-55's where are you mounting your tachs other than built into a gauge set? Anybody done one in the corner of the dash ? Line on the pillar possibly?

mine's mounted on top of the dash centered on the windshield divider. removed the lower windshield molding center piece, drilled a hole & ran the wires thru the dash there

I have a '55 1st series. Mine is mounted on the dash between the gauges. It was originally a mount for a clock accessories.

Submitted for your consideration. Facing the same problem as you but with a 55 2nd, I opted for an Autometer digital tach/shift light. Many bezel colors and the round would go well with the gauges in your truck. Considering how seldom in my experience you actually USE a tach, I didn't want to mess up my dash theme with something hanging out or replacing a needed gauge. For cruising, the digital tach gives needed info and for the strip, the shift light function is really what you need. You can see it mounted in the dash next to the gauge cluster. The bezel matches the Autometer gauges in the cluster. It worked for me.

Funny, you're not the first to point that out. I had to give a response in my build thread...

Back story to that, it's a medical training dummy. My wife went to St. Luke's College of Nursing and one day she was helping clean out a storage room and they were going to throw it out. She brought it home thinking it may be worth something. Turns out it dates back to pre-war and they've been listed on eBay for $500+. Of course that's as far as it went and now it just sits in that chair keeping me company. I should probably get him/her a hat or something

Sun in my Chevelle, installed about 10 years ago is only about 1.5" deep.

Sorry, old man story here.

When I first had my truck I had no tach. It had a hot 235 and a Muncie four speed though! I got a tach that didn't work and made a shift point indicator out of it.

I got a smog device that I can't remember the name of right now. This was the mid 70's and "smogging" your car was just under way in California. You had to install this device that would change the spark advance or something at a certain RPM, I don't remember exactly what it did. But I got the thing and removed the sticker off it to reveal a screw that could be turned to change the point when it would provide the 12 volts needed to do what ever it did.

I ran a wire to a light in the tach after removing the face, so it was just a "light holder" up on the dash.

I adjusted it so it would go on at the perfect RPM and wham, there was my tach!

personally i am a fan of the tach on the column with a gear clamp. no screws in the dash etc. that is if no hole in dash to install into.

I put mine on the column to the right so you don's see it when you open the door. I also bought a nice chrome cup for it so you don't see the gauge body. Its located where the column to dash bracket is and its the perfect viewing spot for me. Don't have a picture but this video of mine shows it

That is where I have always had mine in ever rig I had a tach in. Unless you are actually racing and shifting by the tach you seldom look at the tach anyhow from past experience. Racing you need it in line of sight and if you tow a lot you may want it in line of sight to keep the rpm at a desired speed. Otherwise it is just decoration up there.

Have a huge old sun-pro mounted bottom of dash just left of column. Was supposed to be temporary 25 years ago. This an old pic. Now undergoing its 4th and last (for me) restoration.
