I used an 81 El Camino front clip for my swap which I am very happy with. The only issue I have is a leak at the adjuster for the worm gear. It is a 3 bolt 605 box with o ring fittings. I don't know if there is a seal or o ring inside the case or what. I have tried sealants, washers with rubber centers and just the jam nut, but nothing seems to stop the leak . Is this a sign that something in the box is worn? A rebuilt box is a little over $100 so I think it may be money well spent. Any suggestions? Thanks, Tbrown

When it leaks its usually means not only seals are done but other components. Replacement is best option but caution many "rebuilds" are shoddy and sub par, so hang on to your warranty and be prepared to redo if necessary.

Good advise, thanks. Local Mom and Pop parts store has used a reliable supplier for many years and not had problems. so I think I will give it a try.

check for a local rebuilder if possible. if it is leaking it is probably worn in more than one place so best to take it apart and have it checked out. since it is a steering piece leave it to the guys who do that all the time. a suspension shop may be a good spot to go first, they would be replacing more than a regular wheel alignment shop would be.

If a local rebuilder is available and does good work with a guarantee that would be great. Got one recently from NAPA rebuilt by company called cardone (?). BIG POS and replaced already. Think subbed out to china.

I used to reseal /rebuild a lot of GM power steering boxes and the shop labor flat rate time is going to be as much or more as a good rebuilt.

I don't know if Detroit axle does those but I have used several of their racks with great luck.

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
