Lots of differences between people as far as what works best. As far as my own personal experience, the only good thing about Demerol is that it goes away pretty fast so I can take something that works. It makes my eyelids real heavy, but has negligible effect on pain. My dad, however, is so sensitive to it that he hallucinates kinda like Bob said. Not really an allergy, but definitely something to be wary of. Like Fred T said, the acetaminophen content is a limiting factor in dosing many painkillers. If they tried to introduce it today as a new drug, it'd probably be banned. I tried some fine locally grown cannabis back in the '70's, but it just made things worse (dwelling on the pain, etc.) As far as migraine prevention, I've gotten pretty good results with Mygrafew, a brand of feverfew tablets. I take one every night. I have migraines less often, and they are usually not as bad when I do have them. Haven't had a good puker in 3 or 4 years (knock on wood). I still have to avoid triggers (perfumes, diesel fumes, paper mills, & skunks set mine off big time), but I seem to be able to tolerate them a bit longer before it's too late. I also now get much better results with Midrin (Duradrin, I.D.A., etc.) than I ever got before, thereby decreasing my opiate use. Feverfew should not be used by pregnant women, nursing mothers, or people taking anti-coagulants ("blood thinners"). It has an anticoagulant effect similar to aspirin, and a user might tend to bruise more easily. I read somewhere that about 50% of the feverfew preparations on the market have no active ingredient left in them due to its instability, so if you find a good brand, stick with it. Herbal preparations can vary from batch to batch also. Here's a little info about it:
http://www.smartbodyz.com/FeverfewText.htm http://jaxmed.com/articles/Supplements/feverfew.htm http://www.uspharmacist.com/oldforma...te/acf2f84.htm Here's something about long-term painkiller use. Go to www.uspharmacist.com , search for the word "analgesia", then click on the article entitled Treating Chronic Nonmalignant Pain: Issues and Misconceptions. About halfway down is some info about chronic painkiller use, tolerance, addiction, etc. The medical establishment has really come a long way in the past several years in its understanding of pain management. In 1984, I had a respected doctor tell me that since I was taking 2 or 3 Percodans at a time every couple of weeks, that he was afraid I might become addicted. Now it's common knowledge that some people just need more than the "textbook" dose to get relief. They even started selling double-strength Percocets, etc., recently. The most I take would be aspirin. I really dont feel bothered by pain so I dont take anything, in fact if anything I kinda enjoy pain.

Here if they think you are impaired by drugs you have to submit to a drug test (blood). That or automatically lose your license.

A cop smelled weed on me and almost chagred me with driving under the influence. They are a-holes like that here in america. As for a drug test being cruel and unusual punishment, its about time someone else thought that too! Anything with needles is cruel.

Re: Pain killers: what works for you?
Motrin/Ibuprofen cures all, at least that is what the military seems to think for the last 40ish years.

Wow, a 15 year thread revival... is that a record?
I don't like taking anything unless absolutely necessary.

Re: Pain killers: what works for you?
Got cancer when I was 24 and got put on high dose Oxy. Basically got put on a leash to my doctor for 7 years until the politics of my state changed, my doctor got forced from practice, and they stopped answering calls. So I got to go from 7yrs on narco's for cancer pain, to cold-turkey withdrawal in the course of ~3 days.
Now its just MMJ/CBD and Kratom.

Re: Pain killers: what works for you?
Yeah Jesse, must be a record. I was amazed to see the date this started was before I joined.
I have pain in so many places I'd have to take a moment sitting still to take inventory. For the most part I just roll with it. I was offered a pain prescription for my back pain after a 24' fall in '86 and turned it down. Didn't want to be strung out all my life and don't want to build tolerance for when I REALLY need something (like kidney stones). I've always gone with deal with it over take something. My back bothers me much less now than 30 years ago... mostly because I'm more focused on other parts. I have to really hurt to take something. Much of pain is caused by inflammation, so one Advil is my Choice. I now use CDB for my sleep problems. I don't notice it helping my pain, though. I remember when I first tried Advil. Out of town on a ski vacation with friends on the first night I broke a tooth eating popcorn. Toothache city! And a week before I got to my dentist (if lucky). A friend offered an Advil and BING, the pain was gone. I don't even use the scripts the dentist gives to this day. Just one time, so far, my sciatic nerve put my right leg out of commission. I hopped over to the recliner, my wife lifted my leg for me (could not move it myself at all), gave me an Advil, and thoughts of going to the doctor ran through my mind. The kids grabbed the crutches out of the attic so I could go up to bed. When I went to get out of the chair I discovered all was good and walked up to bed, was fine after that pressure had been relieved. That was 20-25 years ago.

Re: Pain killers: what works for you?
When I went from darvocets to hydocod/ for a herniated disk, second time. Pain in the hips sucks. Now I am having trouble with arthritis and a torn rotator. Medical cannabis is coming here later this year.
