2017 engine in an 84

I came across a 2017 5.3, looking to installing it in my 84. How difficult is a swap like this? Any good builds to use as a guideline?

Re: 2017 engine in an 84

difficulty wise its not that bad...not much different than swapping in a smallblock....not sure on the 17s motor mounts....my suggestion is read all you can....most swaps differ a little from owner to owner....

The 2014 and up have electronic steering, vacuum pump and the tuning needs to be done by someone who knows what their doing.

There are kits to buy for power steering options and the headers are not cheap( BRP hot rods)
These are NOT easy like an LS!

Re: 2017 engine in an 84

What are you guys doing for fuel? Is it the same concept as an LS swap?

What about the radiator? I’ve read to get a 454 radiator, but do I have to get one specifically for a swap or just a regular c10 radiator?

Look into these members posts... 87chevy.com ,aboesec10, and Vannatta20. Also look on youtube for L83 swap.

Re: 2017 engine in an 84

It is not much more difficult than a standard swap. I do them quite a bit. You will need the Holley oil pan. I keep the stock accessory drive to keep costs down. For steering I now use a electric power steering pump that provides power to the factory great box. I have the 454 radiator and it is huge. The standard will cool fine. I can covert the harnesses for plug and play. The programming is tricky but I can help with that as well.

Also worth noting, the gauges are Can bus only, not cheap!!

Here is a cool solution to the can bus issues. Dakota digital makes a module for 100$ that outputs a vss signal and tach signal

Dakota Digital OBD II Tachometer/Speedometer Interfaces STA-1000
