Getting some blue plates (correct for my 70 GMC). Which ones do u like better? Anything jump out to u that is more specific to our trucks (as far as numbers/letters)?

Re: Which plate do u vote for??

Since I watch a lot of TV I'd vote for the "PBS" plate.

Re: Which plate do u vote for??

075 VKL
Only 6 characters, Seems rare in a state as big as CA.

...On the other hand,
1JY6453 looks like it is in the best shape of the three.

I'm [like] no help

Re: Which plate do u vote for??

Ok since I’ve had a couple votes, I’ll fill in my thoughts.

Jyg would be cool if I was older (doing the jig comes to mind)
PBS isn’t something I usually watch and isn’t it more of a left leaning channel?? I’m conservative.

075 VKL is the one I like most. It’s older, less characters. It’s the most worn but that’s ok with me, kinda matches my beat up truck. Haha

Re: Which plate do u vote for??

Of those three, I like the smaller numbers/letters on the center pic. But I really prefer black plates which were still in use in 1970. My '72 has black plates. Question for you, though -- are these the actual plates you are considering? Last I heard, pickups require commercial plates (unless the bed is covered/enclosed all the time) and commercial plates have only one letter. Maybe there are exceptions, now I am curious.

Re: Which plate do u vote for??

Not sure if you have 2 plates
But you will need (2) matching for California (YOM)
Also those are all car plates
If it matters, your truck most likely would have had a black plate, with commercial plate layout. Last letter could be
G H I or J
But Ca only allows Black plates thru 69
So the best you could do is find blue

Here is a picture of blue plates
You can see the difference of car vs. truck plates

And a link for more info
http://www.oldplateguy.com/1970-1980...ates-For-Sale/

They also come up on eBay now and then

Re: Which plate do u vote for??

Hmmm. Thought 69-86 were blue plates???

And yes I “was” planning to use these blue plates on my truck. And all the ones I posted are a pair.

So, should I look for black plates instead? And with only ONE letter???

Don’t want to waste $$ on plates that won’t work

Re: Which plate do u vote for??

You won’t be able to use any of those plates on a 70. 2 of them have 7 characters, and 1 of them isn’t a commercial plate.

Re: Which plate do u vote for??

If your truck is a 70
You will have to use Blue. Per DMV
In reality, 69 and 70 originally came with black.
Sometimes you will see original 71 and 72 trucks with black plates, usually if they were originally licensed in rural areas.
Because DMV was slower in using up there licence plates in those areas

If you want to stay somewhat (period correct)
Buy blue ones with K as last letter

It doesn’t really matter, but the letters got higher as the years went by
For example
71’s got K L
72’s got M N O and sometimes P
73’s got Q R
74-75 got S T
Etc. etc

Re: Which plate do u vote for??

You should have plates that look like this if you don't have a camper shell or something that makes it a "house car". The pair on the left.

Option 8 is what I have correct?? Commercial 1970 vehicle?? It only states blue plates with 6 yellow characters?? Am I missing something? It doesn’t say anything about only having a single letter.

So given that, the 6 digit plate I posted would work correct??

Re: Which plate do u vote for??

Won’t work

Read the 70-72 commercial vehicles/truck. Rules

If you show up to dmv with a blue plate conforming to their rules.
And have a 1970 sticker on one of the plates
They
Will run the plate to make sure it is clear
If it is
They will photo copy it and send the copy to Sacramento
Then give you a suspense paper (temporary permit for your window)

In 2-4 Weeks you will get your month and year sticker with a letter that tells you that you can now run the plates

It is easy to do, just follow their rules
Or you will be standing in a lot of lines
And
Not getting what you want

Re: Which plate do u vote for??

The other option is to get the new black/yellow plates. I checked into this myself after i got my 70...even though the title says manufactured in 69 i still would have to find YOM commercial blue plates because the model year is 70. Decided to just keep the white ones that are on there.

Re: Which plate do u vote for??

Well, I ended up getting the "075 VKL" plates (I had already asked the guy about them multiple times and felt like buying them was the right thing to do). They will be wall hangers for now. They are in great shape, and will look very good if I clean them properly (wiped them quickly with a wet papertowel).

I'm now either going to:

1. Keep the existing beat up white plates (0 cost)

2. Have DMV give me new White plates (whatever random number they come up with) $20

3. Go with the new Black/Yellow Vanity plates (would need to come up with a cool name involving 70 GMC somehow). Those are like $50 first year, $40 each Year after.

I know. I could also do Veterans plates. But that limits me to 6 digits.

This is my Daily Driver:

It has the Air Force sticker on it now, this was before I put the sticker on.
