Two questions on primers. Any help appreciated.

Hey guys, I just picked up a good 60 gallon compressor for a steal yesterday
I wanted to have the ability to paint my truck and run air tools. I've been looking at what to do to paint the frame in past posts (rattle cans, powder coat, por15, epoxy, etc.) for the last couple weeks leading up to buying the compressor. So I plan to paint the frame and eventually the truck itself in time, after practice. I am getting slightly confused on what to use where. I'm seeing epoxy on bare metal, high build attracts moisture, urethane (I'm not sure), lacquer is outdated. Then reading Eastwoods site they claim:

"Existing Finishes: Epoxy primer is perfect for paint jobs over existing lacquer or enamel finishes. The epoxy primer will create a barrier to keep topcoats from reacting to your old paint. Sand existing finish with 180 - 440 Grit and shoot 2-3 coats of epoxy to seal away the old finish."

After the wall of text my questions are simply:

1) is epoxy primer okay to use on the cab and bed of my truck over the factory paint, or should I sack up and pony out the cash to have a mobile media blaster hit it all, and epoxy prime before flash rust sets in?

2) What is urethane and high build used for? Instead of epoxy or on top of?

I'm picking up a couple cheap HF purple guns for $10 each to lay the primer. I've got a 60 gallon 14.5cfm @40 compressor with a regulator and in line moisture trap. And I'll need to buy the primer and other materials. Not sure what else I'll need yet as I'm still searching old posts.

Re: Two questions on primers. Any help appreciated.

One thing that is a constant in old vehicles, rust and previous hack work. I would take the opportunity to strip to bare metal as you are progressing through your restoration (can even be done one panel at a time) for those two exact reasons.

Any previous work that may have been done sub-par can be corrected. 25 years ago or so when the internet was in it's infancy, you couldn't find much in available resources to learn proper methods of repair, and perhaps someone did what they could. Today with so much more available, I would use the opportunity to make any corrections to prolong the life of your paint job.

Rust... If you don't strip off the existing down to bare metal, in many cases you won't see the rust that is just starting to come through, or the rust covered up by 1/2" of bondo, etc.. Any pitting from the back side just prior to breaking through the surface will show up on the outside surface as a dark circle about 1/16 diameter or so, noticeably darker/different than the surrounding metal. You will not see this condition unless you take the panels to bare metal. Being blindly satisfied with previous work or unknown conditions is the fastest way for all your hard work and money for paint products to go down the tubes. The time to address these conditions is when the cost will be minimal, before all the expensive paint products go on. Seeing rust bubbling through a two year old paint job is a hard pill to swallow, fix those issues before painting.

Sometimes even when you know what you should do, you still need to hear it. I will just pay the media guy. Im pretty sure he can strip the whole thing in 2hrs. I've got the components separated and stripped. Im looking at roughly $400.00-600 that's not too much for peace of mind. Would you leave just the areas that need to be cut out exposed or sand the primer off when ready to weld in new patches?

I have never understood this thinking. Why go through all the trouble, money, labor and time only to have your project rely on 40 something year old paint as the foundation? It makes absolutely no sense to me.

The extra money spent to strip off the old paint and start from scratch is a drop in the bucket in what you would spend if/when you need to redo the paint due to past problems.

If you get it blasted epoxy prime the entire thing right ASAP.

I would also ask any blasters how they strip paint. All the good ones I've talked too use a 2 step process, first plastic media to remove paint, then crushed glass for rust.

Epoxy is for adhesion and corrosion protection.
Urethane or high build primer has no adhesion or corrosion abilities but has high film build used to level out uneven surfaces.

You might want to rethink that HF gun, they are air hogs. Your compressor might have a hard time keeping them feed. Eastwoods has a gun or two that run at lower CFM levels as does Astro Pneumatic.

Okay, so bare metal is the way to go. The mobile guy uses a wet blasting with glass in it.

I have read numerous threads and the general consensus seemed to be the cheapo hf purple was good for primer. But I have no experience so If it will really cause a 60 gallon 12.85 @ 90 14.55@ 40psi to not keep up then I'll pass on it. I've got this one in my cart for the bc/cc,

Astro EUROHV105 EuroPro Forged HVLP Spray Gun with 1.5mm Nozzle and Plastic Cup https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00407QGZC..._93fgBbN4GPZSY

1.8 tip is the proper one for primer though, correct?

Re: Two questions on primers. Any help appreciated.

A 1.3 or 1.4 for base and clear would be my choice. Those Astro guns I've read some pretty good reviews on.

The HF guns, get a 20% coupon and try one out, if it doesn't run the gun cost you what 10-15 bucks.

Check the P-pages or tech sheets on the products you intend to buy, they will provide you with mix ratios, flash times, sand times and also what size tip is suggested.

I've sprayed urethane primers that worked fine with 1.4 and others that needed a 1.7 or 1.8

What do you think about this kit?
Calls for 13cfm @ 30. Do you think that's cutting it too close to the upper limit on my compressor?
