67 283sbc question

Ok fairly new to the c10 scene. I have a 67 lwb fleet with a 283 and a 3speed manual "3 on the tree"

Now the engine is fairly fresh. It has an edlebrock performer intake and 500 cfm carb manual choke (new) It also has been converted to Hei. Summit long tube coated headers into mufflers. The engine runs very well and doesn't hesitate and seems very smooth.

My question is, is it normal with the 3speed and 283 to have to feather the clutch a lot to get moving? It just seems that I have no torque so I am wondering if it is a gearing issue with the 3speed. Once the truck is moving all is good and everything seems fine. Take offs from a stop sign just seem to really bogg down the engine drastically.

Is there any indication of an optional rear axle on the SPID? (inside the glove box door) I have never owned a 283/3 speed combo but I would think it should take off pretty easily when stopped.

If there isn't anything on the SPID look on the rear axle tube and see if there is a code number stamped into it. Post #8 in this thread shows the location:

Some rear axles have the code stamped into the carrier center section as shown in post #19 also.

If you find a code, look it up in the charts in that thread. The code will be two or three letters as shown in the charts.

That doesn't seem right to me. The thing should be able to get rolling without even touching the gas pedal. That is, on level ground, let the clutch out really slow in 1st. It should, at idle, pull good enough to roll the truck from a stop to idling along with the clutch fully disengaged. You may need to "feather" the clutch in this situation to coax it all the way up to idle speed.

Can you push the truck in neutral easily on level ground? Will it coast down hill all by itself?

Yes it coasts well. I agree I thought I could get it moving just releasing the clutch slowly but if I don't gas it, it will stall out (on a flat surface)

These three speeds usually had something like 2.6X first gears and should come off the line like gangbusters. My bone stock (except for an added 4GC Rochester, dual exhaust and a timing curve kit) '64 Malibu with a 283, PG and a 3.08 axle would take off burning rubber until I went to 8 inch wide tires (open axle). Can you get a part number off the trans? Someone here will be able to tell you what the ratios for the gears are. (3rd will pretty surely be 1:1). You should be good off the line even with a 3.08 axle ratio, though.

I will try and locate some axle numbers and tranny numbers. Would running to rich cause a lack of torque? The reason I am asking is that I am running an edlebrock 500 carb and I am seeing up to 8-9 psi and from what I have read edelbrock carbs need to be at 4.5-5 psi. I have a regulator on order and will install when I get it not sure if it is going to help or not though.

If it is rich enough to foul the plugs (not saying that it has), that can cause weakness. But you say it runs out fine once rolling, so I doubt that the plugs are fouled.
