Engine Detailing - 1964 C10 With 283 V8

Does anyone have photos of factory correct engine detailing on a 64 283'that they can post? The recent Photobucket fiasco has made searching old threads for photos very frustrating.

I recently acquired a very nice 65 Chevy Impala. It currently has a 355/TH350 drivetrain, but I was able to get the original 195hp 2-bbl 283 along with the car. It is complete carb to pan and was running when pulled. I plan to rebuild it to stock specs and detail it as close as possible to factory correct, then install into my 64 C10.

Re: Engine Detailing - 1964 C10 With 283 V8

here is my 283. It came out of a 63 Biscayne with a Powerglide. It was 90% complete when I was given it except for the air cleaner and exhaust manifolds. I rounded up a pair of ram horns from the local salvage yard and the air cleaner was one that was on the v-8 that was in the truck. My Suburban originally had the 292 L6 with a Powerglide. I made this one look as close to factory as I could with the exception of the orange paint. I believe truck 283's were a blue-green color but don't quote me on that. You might also check the factory correct restoration section at the top of this page.

Here is my advice. Put the original engine back in the Impala, swap the 350 into the truck. The Impala will be worth more, and the truck probably will be, too. It will be easy to detail the 350 to appear like a 283/327.

I'm a fellow 65 Impala owner, btw. Numbers matching, 327 4bbl.

Here's my '64 not 100% correct, but keeping it real on a budget.

Those are great photos guys, thanks! The Impala is a keeper, so re-sale isn't an issue for me, and the car is much more enjoyable with the 350 and TH350 drivetrain combo. Other than the engine and the wheels, the car will be left factory. Here are a couple of photos.

Beautiful car man, congratulations on owning it. I have always considered the 65 Impala to be the best looking car Chevy ever produced, and owning one has long been on my bucket list.

Thanks again to all for the photos. Details like the correct gray color, the air cleaner, the oil fill tube, hoses, engine decals, etc are all things I wanted some ideas on.

Re: Engine Detailing - 1964 C10 With 283 V8

Here is a photo of the 283 before it was removed from the Impala, so I think I have intake, carb, air cleaner, valve covers, heads, cast iron distributor, etc that can be detailed to very closely approximate a correct engine for my 64 C10. Looking forward to digging into it. Will probably do a completely stock rebuild of the 283 before detailing and installation.

Re: Engine Detailing - 1964 C10 With 283 V8

Looks like a great start. Btw, as you may know, the "High Torque 283" decals actually belong on the sides of the valve cover. I just liked it better on the air cleaner snorkel. Also the upper radiator hose is originally metal with a rubber sleeve clamped at both ends. Also, I'm thinking the fuel filter is more hidden under the air cleaner. Not sure about if it was still a glass bowel type in '64 but I got mine from LMC. It is an A.C Delco (or so it said) and it wasn't too expensive either. Mine also has a pcv valve discreetly hidden in the old street breather hole and a hose going to the backside of the carb base. I also run an hei and I used srtaight boot wires run behind the block. Technically they should be a 90 degree boot and fit into brackets along the oil pan and I think there's supposed to be a heat shield under the manifolds too. Someday I want to get me a pair of those shields and correct the wires too. Trouble is fitting the fatter hei wires into the loom brackets along the pan.

I have the original 283 heat shields for the wires off of my 283. Have never used them as I always knick my knuckles while working on my engine. swapping to a 350 next year and will put them back on to sell the engine. It came out of a 63 Biscayne with a Powerglide.
