Thanks for the info.
One final question - are we looking to achieve a complete end to end weld of the hood seam, or is it ok if is has many tacks along the way but the seam not welded completely end to end? Wade

Personally I'd weld it solid...also another tip is to get some heat sink putty....it'll help stop the heat from running out into the thin metal...

A local on Craigslist is selling a brand new reproduction seamless AD hood for $200. Given all the work and potential problems of modifying an original, that sounds like a bargain.

I remember a episode of gas crackers where they tried to make one of those aftermarket smooth hoods work...they gave up and put original back on...seems like they had a lot of other fitment issues though

I welded mine,I did put a little filler strip down to keep bondo to a minimum,I have seen so many trucks with the bondo cracked all along the welded seam,truck is dusty but you get the picture.I think if I did it again,I would tack weld then glue a filler strip in before bondo.

Regarding welding the seam, each hood half has a pretty large radius.whiere the flanges are formed. Do you fill the entire valley of the seam That would take lots of wire. I was thinking of using a piece of 3/16 diawire and let it form a peak after I skim ir. The rod would be tacked a bit at a time as suggested.
