Transmission ID

This is a 3-speed automatic that I pulled out of my '72 C20. I assumed it was a TH350, but the guy at NAPA said that truck with a 350 V8 could have 8 possible transmissions. Where do I scrape to find markings? Can you ID it just by pan shape?
Thanks.

Re: Transmission ID

Yes TH350 and I’d stand in line at NAPA at someone else’s register. There were only 2 three-speed automatic transmissions available. 350 and 400.

And if you have one as pictured with the Monster label on it you are likely in deep poo poo. Search "Monster complaints" to read the nightmares.

Good to know. It's original, so I think I'm ok.

Re: Transmission ID

Ok safe bet to say Munice. Nothing specal about my pickup. But is thare an esay way to tell wich one it is that doesn't involve scraping 47 years worth of greas off it. Like is the pan differnt?

Re: Transmission ID

Here's a good thread to ID the SM465. This is different from a car trans - has a granny low/1st. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=457810
If original, it should be on the SPID - as "M20" I believe - it was not standard equipment, lack of mention on the SPID would mean the truck was born as a 3-speed.

Re: Transmission ID

4-speed should be listed on the SPID for Chev or GMC as it was an optional trans. Here's a couple GMC SPIDs for ref. These truck are so old that something swapped in 20 years after it was new can look original at this point, ha. But you never know, SPIDs have had mistakes before!

Re: Transmission ID

Who knows for sure maby it was swapped in from another 67-72gm truck. That would explane all the correct parts.
