Front Disc's Rubbing on Lower A-Arm

Hey guy, old thread I know but I thought I would mention I have the same issue. Unfortunately for me I rushed putting the truck back together and didn't realize the rubbing issue until I cut a 1/4" 45º chamfer into the back side of my rotors...

If anybodies still watching this thread I can get some pictures of my damage to post. I was thinking maybe I needed to change to tubular a-arms or something.

I am very interested in this, as I just received my CPP disk brake kit for the Burb and plan on installing the kit soon. In the photos of steveb64's installation, it looks like he had used the existing lower ball joints (which look quite short). Is this the problem? I got the complete kit with new ball joints, tie rods,etc. So I hope that with the new ball joints, I won't have this problem. I also got dust plates with my kit.

CPP offers a 73-87 ball joint upgrade. If you end up with 73-87 ball joints and a spindle meant for 63-66 ball joints the spindle will sit way too far down on the ball joint - the result is the disc rubbing on the lower A-arm.

I got the complete kit, so I hope that the spindles and ball joints work together. (Keeping my fingers crossed.)

I am also wondering what caused steveb64's rotors seem to go too far onto the spindle.

Here is the picture of mine, it was using brand new MOOG brand ball joints for upper and lower. Also surprised at how quick everything got covered in rust so when I tear it back down to trim the lowers, I need to get it painted or powder coated.

Im having the same issue on a 66 with cpp modulars the rotor is rubbing the a arm i used new moog balljoints for the 66 a arms. Are there different balljoints to gain clearance?? Looks like i would have to grind way to much off.Thanks pics will follow.

I bought new moog joints for the 66 arms and they still rub????

It almost looks like you have too much positive camber (top stick out more than bottom) which will tilt the bottom edge of the rotor into the arm. If you can set your lower arms at ride height and put a 90* square on the ground and up to the face of the rotor, it should be flush or slight gap at the top of the rotor to the square. If you have a gap at the bottom, you need to remove shims from the upper arm.

Thanks you are right,i had noticed this was way off when i first installed the spindles and 2 inch drop coils, top of the tires were way out (more on pass than driverside) so i took all removable shims out,the only one left is cone shaped washer.I just checked with the square and i still have a quarter inch gap on the bottom of the rotor. Am i missing something else?? Thanks for the help.

Wow, that is a lot to pull in. Did you ever pull off the upper A arms? I did on my '68 and put them back on the wrong sides, which caused problems. Something somewhere is definitely off as with no shims, you should have a gap at the top of the square to the rotor. Was the truck ever in an accident where it could have twisted the frame rails? Definitely weird.

Nope never took them off the truck, can't see any damage to the frame . It drove nice before I pulled it apart. Time to go deeper I guess.
