Calling all crew cab builders

I came across a 1972 suburban that would be perfect for a crew cab build. Its cheap. No engine, trans. 1/2 ton axles. It has weird stuff like Cadillac tail lights... Bad rattle can paint job.

The doors look very nice. The rockers look good.

The only problem I can see is the roof has been cut out of it. A huge rectangle for a skylight or something. I'm talking front to back. About 3" in from the drip rail. The cut out piece is still there. Its duct taped back in place. I can't see the quality of the cut under the tape. (maybe I could just weld it back?)

I would definitely lower the roof line down on it.
Listing price is $950. Guy claims almost zero rust.
Its 4 hours from me with a trailer. I'm thinking $500 MAX on it.
What do you think?

Re: Calling all crew cab builders

Cheaper is always better but for $950 if it's rust free, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I've had to replace a lot of rust in mine but most was the common areas on a truck cab, but mixed Wednesday th the fab, it takes lots of time. Trevor

Re: Calling all crew cab builders

If it really is rust free, not hiding a bunch of filler under that rattle can, and closer>> I would be happy with $750-$850.
I'll have $130 in fuel, plus I'll have to bring the wife. There goes another $300 on ANTIQUES (unless I can find a 6' bed worth of parts first!)

Do you think the roof being cut out will be a big issue>? I imagine the outer edge of the cut would be pretty decent. But the inside piece might be butchered.

Re: Calling all crew cab builders

I wouldn't worry too much, my roof is 3 different roofs. That's mainly due to me wanting a cab light roof.
You could always cut another roof off something else like a van or newer suburban/Tahoe too. Trevor

Re: Calling all crew cab builders

I guess if the corners are all there it would be ok.

How far along are you with your duramax build?

Re: Calling all crew cab builders

I'm checking out your build now. Sorry to hear about your surgery. This hurdle will only make driving that truck even better.
I've seen builds on the 4th door. Yours is the nicest I've seen. If I do get a burb I think I'd keep it 3 door.
