Plaid interior question

My truck is a 70 camper special dark gold metallic and white with sandal wood ( off white) and dark saddle interior. Originally the seat and door panels are sandal wood. The seat needs to be recovered and I love the white seat but I don't want it to get destroyed because is all white. I really like the plaid seats does anyone know of a color or where I could get one that matches

Re: Plaid interior question

I apologize.

I am working here in Kauai, Hi. and I am in the middle of a devilish Corned Beef and Cabbage dish. With some Jameson tossed in.

SS Tim. He, in my opinion, through many hours of scanning this site, with few posts of my own, the leading expert on original pickups, SPID review and understanding of what plaid is about as far as Mr.Louis C. is concerned.

Happy St. Pats!

Re: Plaid interior question

^^^ He's definitely the king of documents and computer based research.

So, what was saddle in your interior? Interiors came in one color only. I believe what you are calling sandalwood is actually what GM called gold, darker than parchment and lighter than sandalwood. There were no sandalwood interiors, but there were gold. It has an almost yellow tint. I think banana when I see it. Sandalwood is the color used in parchment interiors for dash pads, steering wheels, and columns. The plaid was only offered in '72 and only with parchment interior. There were four colors of plaid: grey, green, orange, and blue. since what you are after is nt a factory del, you could expand that by looking at any number of plaid automotive fabric offered both factory correct and replacement. The '70 CST Custom Camper/30 Winnebago I owned had a parchment interior that Winnebago had stitched in a gold plaid fabric on the seating surfaces. It was worn out and this was years before reproduction CST seat covers were made. I had my upholstery guy cover the seat in parchment roll & pleat. This was my daily construction work truck and the seat fared quite well. Vinyl seats are easy to clean

Re: Plaid interior question

I got sandal wood from looking in the classic industries catalog. My truck had a mat on the floor and I put carpet in thas what's saddle. My interior could be parchment but it's original so it's not very white any more

Re: Plaid interior question

Looks like parchment from here, but monitors/photos can lie. Classic is either wrong or you were looking at dash pads. I stumbled across a picture of a sandalwood steering wheel I used to have but now can't find it. Sandalwood is tan, parchment is slightly off white, and gold is in between. Definitely not white or tan. I think of the banana fruit, nt the outside of the peel. Does your truck have a SPID on the back side of the glovebox door? What color is your steering column? A/C vent color?

What I was getting at is you want something custom, so no rules here. A good upholstery shop came show you selections on vinyl and plaid color/pattern options. The only color in this realm you can get in a factory cover to modify will be parchment. There are no ready made Highlander seat covers produced. It's possible SMS would emboss the factory pattern into a shade of your choice, but now you are really getting into an expensive seat cover.

Re: Plaid interior question

The paint? Interiors were one color only and GM wouldn't be calling it white for trim color. It will likely be at the bottom opposite the paint description and might say vinyl or just trim along with color.

Here is the SPID from a truck I had with parchment:

And another I still have with blue:

Re: Plaid interior question

There ya go. That's the gold and you're probably thinking, "Doesn't look gold to me" and I would have to agree. I can't tell dirty parchment from gold unless I put them side by side. Great colors on that truck, BTW. I see your previous owner was like the one who owned the '71 Custom Camper/20 I had. He was very meticulous. He had band aid boxes with bulbs wrapped in tissue and a piece of paper listing which bulb went where. He had spare lenses for the camper body stashed the same way. All 5 tires matched and there were service records that listed the mileage each time he washed it. Ok, that last one I made up, but you get what I'm saying. How about that end off the spark plug box?

Re: Plaid interior question

Coming into this party late... Thanks for the support guys! :-)
Like Special-K says the colors are really close between the Light Gold/ivory and Parchment/white.
While a Highlander plaid insert would be an easy change on your seat, the cost and effort for original fabric is likely about the same and probably also available from SMS Auto Fabrics.
If you are taking votes my first would be the original Light Gold/ivory cloth. Second would be a gray Highlander plaid but it may be too white against the Light Gold/ivory vinyl.

To help with the original interior colors 70 here is a link with some relevant pictures.

Re: Plaid interior question

That's where SMS may be able to help. But, also there is a vast availability of materials available other than OEM matching. In other words, it is likely you can find a match in the general selection of product. Before there were any reproduction OEM-like seat covers I had a seat covered in parchment that was a dead-on match with my door panels. I also had C.A.R.S. custom make me bucket seat covers in saddle with saddle houndstooth before store-bought covers were available.

Re: Plaid interior question

It might be easier to go with parchment, if you're not concerned with staying "as built". The truck still would have had the sandalwood items I see.

BTW, Half Moon Bay was where I first saw the Pacific and got my feet wet. I really picked a nice place w/o knowing anything about the general S.F. area. I had driven cross country with a friend who was flying out of S.F. to Alaska and we had a few hours to kill. I looked at the map and it was near enough and sounded good. I was right
