I stopped in plenty of time and I wasn’t driving very fast. I thought had I hit him the helmet wouldn’t have done much good.

I know most folks mean well when they suggest wearing a helmet.
Thanks for not saying that it’s stupid to not wear a helmet.

I know 4 people in the last couple of years that were hit by a car/truck. None of them were wearing helmets.
Last September my friends hit a truck goin 55mph on their motorcycle. My buddies wife sustained worse injuries. I drove them to church and grocery store for quite some time. Neither one had a helmet on. She may have had a concussion...I can’t remember. They both had some extremely serious injuries.

I’ve read automobile accidents account for the most head injuries and #2 are pedestrians. Cyclists are on down the list.
I’ve also read that it’s safer to not wear a helmet.
I think the Netherlands and Denmark have the most cyclists and most don’t wear helmets.

I think helmets could help in some situations and not so much in most cases.
Strictly speaking about bicycles here...it's just a safety thing for me, just like the clear or amber eye glasses I'd put on too every time I hit the trails...back in the day when I was riding 3 times a week. 75% of my riding was off-road with terrain and usually involved tight passes through trees. I would have felt dangerously ill prepared without the helmet.

As you say though, it's likely I could have survived my entire riding career without having ever snapped the d@mn thing on my head! Would have stayed cooler too I reckon.

You’re speaking of an entirely different type of riding than I am. If I was going to ride aggressively with what you described I’d wear a helmet, glasses, gloves, knee and elbow pads.

This topic has made me think. I haven’t ridden my motorcycle much the last couple of years. I have a set of leathers my brother in law gave me sometime ago that I don’t wear much. I mostly don’t want to look like I’m trying to be a hard guy... 93* weather isn’t making me want to get out on the scooter.

Re: Perfect night for a run

It was a decent morning - 68 degrees, winds out of the east at about 10 MPH. I've been working on improving my 7th mile, trying to get it down to 9:30 or better. It starts at the bottom of a very steep hill, and continues up the hill about 1/4 mile, then the hill becomes more gradual for a while, there's about 200 feet of downhill, and the last 1/4 is a gradual but deceptively steep hill. It's definitely my hardest mile. By the time I get there, I've already gone 6 miles, and miles 3, 5, and 6 are mostly uphill.

Anyway, today I was able to keep it to 9:46, with an overall pace of 9:15 for 7.78 miles. I guess I'm just old and slow...

Re: Perfect night for a run

I think you may be underestimating your pace. You’re definitely not too old.
Doesn’t sound to me like you have an easy route.
I’ve got one kind of serious hill on my long run route.
At the third mile. After that hill I’m feeling it.
And I only run 4 times a week.
My 3 to 7ish mile runs during the week is all flat.

I’m trying to be mindful of not adding too many miles and slowly pick up my pace as not to get an injury.

My job is pretty physical so I’m ok with not a lot of hills at this point.
Once I get caught up at work I can schedule a lighter work load and get a little more focused on my routine.
The only goals I have right now are to run as much as I can and to do the best I can for my 1/2 marathon in October.

Re: Perfect night for a run

Almost a perfect morning for a long run. I headed south on the trail into a nice cool breeze at 63*. Lasted about a mile as I turned East I was now running towards the sun. After another mile I ventured back north and the sun wasn’t an issue the rest of the run.
I didn’t push too hard but the last 3 miles were a challenge.

I talked with a cyclist on the trail after I finished my run. I was picking his brain a little bit.
I’m getting stoked and a little excited to get my bicycle back from the guy working on it.
I’m hoping that I can reduce some of my work load but, I still got to make a living.
Probably never fully retire. Got to do something, even if it’s wrong.

Re: Perfect night for a run

I’m thinking about signing up for a 5k/10k race in September.
I’ve signed up for a half marathon for October and want to do the Billy Mills /10k in November.
That would get me three races by the end of the year.
I want to do a 10 in September but if I can’t find a 5k to run in August I’ll do the 5k in September the Lord willing.
Then I’d hit all the distances that I like to race this year.

So the weather this morning was pretty nice, I decided to see how fast I could do a 5k.
I’m stoked with the results and I will attribute in part my faster times with the watch.
My cadence is picking up but, having an alert every mile telling me my time is crucial and quite motivating.
I pushed a little harder this morning. If I can keep an 8.30 mile pace consistently I thinking that is a major accomplishment for me.

Re: Perfect night for a run

That's a good pace, and very consistent from mile to mile.

Re: Perfect night for a run

A little foggy at 6:00 this morning. 66* no breeze, all in all a beautiful start to the day.
4.12 easy miles. I only got 3 runs in last week. Going to try to squeeze 4 runs in before Sunday. My work schedule is on the heavy side.

Re: Perfect night for a run

I saw a break in the rain so I went for a 3 mile run.
I worked in some sprints after the run. About 1.5 miles of “fartleks”-speed play.
I’m getting close to my goal of consistently hitting 8.30 minute miles.... on my short runs anyway.

Re: Perfect night for a run

Perfect morning for a LSD run... long slow duration.
Trying to build endurance. It ain’t easy running slow.
Getting close to my times from 10 years ago.
I’d like to shave 10 minutes off that time.

Re: Perfect night for a run

Just caught up reading all this. Not to step on y'all's thread but I wonder if you and truckster use the Strava app. Kind of like social media for exercise tracking. I would love to have a group of board members who could track each other's progress. I have always been a mountain biker and ran occasionally and could use some motivation to run more. Have some endurance goals related to biking and trail running (hate running on roads).

Re: Perfect night for a run

I haven’t used the strava app. I’m learning how to use the Garmin watch I bought a while back. Last week the connect app was down. Didn’t bother me because the watch still did it’s job. I bought it on trucksters recommendation and I’m liking it a lot.
I did some 200 meter workouts today at the local college football field/track.
I played a few city league games on the football field 10 years ago but, I never ran on the track till today.
I may end up looking into the strava app. It’d interesting to to follow others here like you mentioned. I think it a good idea.
I’m glad you stepped into this thread.

The Altra’s are an excellent track shoe.

I've used Strava but I don't like it. It's way too nosy for me. I stay off of social media because I like my privacy.

I just set my privacy so noone sees my activities unless I allow it. Links from my bike computer and Garmin connect automatically.

Re: Perfect night for a run

Still not running here, and only using the step part of my Iphone for keeping track. Im down 40 lbs now. Im shooting for 195lbs for my goal weight by the end of August (started at 243 in March. Gym is back open now as long as you distance and wear your mask. At 60 its going to be hard to put on muscle, but I think I can make small gains and that will help me displace a little more of the fat.

Good job to the rest of you that are playing on this thread, especially Kingsolver72. My knees ache just reading what you do!!!

Re: Perfect night for a run

That’s impressive CG! Keep up the hard work.

I seriously think that it’s healthier to walk than to run but I like running.
When I train jujitsu if I’m running too much I noticed I’m not as strong when I roll.
Obviously different energy systems.
I’m fortunate that my knees are good. I pray they stay that way.
I met a guy yesterday that ran in high school and college, even coaches. He was telling me his hip flexor has been giving him problems the last few years. He said he still runs every other day. Some days he can’t finish his run. That’s gotta stink. He seems like he has adjusted to his situation.

I’ve lost a substantial amount of weight but, a lot of it is my job. I’ve been busier than I have ever been. I’m booked up until November. Seems like all I’m gettin by is heavy, thick carpet 20’ to 30’ cuts of carpet.
Had to mug a 15’ x 26’ chunk of Berber up a flight of stairs by myself last week.z
Sometimes it ain’t awesome working by yourself.

I lost 60#, started lifting when I got down to 230#. Using the bodyfat monitor at work I calculated that I went from 230# to 190# without losing any muscle mass.

Re: Perfect night for a run

Beautiful morning for a run.
83* and a nice breeze out of the south.

I drove to the college track and it was packed.. school started back this week.. so I drove to the trail/park.

My left calf was buggin a little bit. I did manage to work it out.
I decided I’d do some 1 mile repeats. Started off with a mile warm up and finished with a mile cool down.
Today I got my fastest mile in so far this year at 7.15.
My cool was at 9.02.
New goal... I may sign up for a 5k in September. I’d like to be able to do it in under 24 minutes. That’s 6 weeks.

Re: Perfect night for a run

I ran 4.3 this morning... there's a story there, if you're interested...

You might remember that I was complaining about hitting a wall and not getting any faster. In fact, after that I started to slow down. Every time I ran it felt like my quads were sore and overworked, even if I gave myself 3-4 days of rest. And my pace just kept getting slower and slower.

I was also having some serious back pain. I had a level 3-4 fusion in 2009, and I decided to see a back pain specialist to see what I could do. He had me get an MRI and did some other tests, and on the MRI it's clear that there is almost no space left where the nerve branch comes out of 4-5. I didn't put it all together until I mentioned to him that sometimes the stabbing pains were so sharp that my knees buckled. He said, "Yeah, the L4-5 controls the quadriceps, and the nerves are really inflamed. That's why you're having problems."

So I gave up running for five or six weeks and got three series of injections in my back. It was interesting, because after about three weeks I started having really bad muscle cramps when I was asleep, especially in my calves. I guess they wanted to get back out on the road.

Anyway, I went out and ran today. The quads felt much better, and I was able to get some better times, although I could feel the effects of not running for that long. It looks like I'm going to have to put my thousand-mile goal aside. For now the plan is to run no more than 4-5 miles three times a week. My back doctor says even that is too much, but I guess my body will let me know.

I hope recovery time helps. I bet the dr. was amazed by how much running you were able to do.. I know I am. Back injuries have to be a major mind warp because you get no relief from standing, sitting or laying down.
Again,I hope that your body heals and you are able to get back to do the things you like to do.
Sounds like you have a good plan for easing back into a routine.

Thanks. Running is really the only thing I let up on. I've been working on my Blazer every day...

My son, who is a 12B Combat Engineer like his old man, decided to have a pushup contest with me the other day. The old man still smoked him.

Well, I was planning on signing up for a 5k in September and I went to look if it had been cancelled because I had a feeling. Indeed it has been cancelled .
It’s got me wondering if my 1/2 marathon that signed up to run in October will be axed. We will see.

Beautiful morning for a run.
My long run for the week is a little over 7 miles today. Did the 10k portion in 55.05. Not my fasted 10k ever, but it’s my fastest this year.
I got in 6 miles yesterday. I took it super easy. I’m seeing some improvement in running economy.
