Engine and trans

So I had a quick question about pairing up an engine and trans. I'm not a mas
ter mechanic but I can find my way around an engine. Quick background on my vehicle; it's a 64 lwb with a 230 and Muncie 3 speed transmission but converting it to a short bed. I am looking to swap the engine with a 350 and transmission to an auto th350. Is this a good matchup? If so, do I have to swap the gears in the rear end? Am I going to need the short tail shaft or long tail shaft? Do I need to move my cross member? This is where my limited mechanic skills hold me back, I'm not very good when it comes to transmissions and gear ratios.

Re: Engine and trans

No need to swap rear gears just because of the trans swap. Both current trans and TH350 have 1:1 highway gear, so mileage and rpm should be the same. 350/TH350 probably the most common swap ever, tried and true - am sure many on here can help with the rest of your details. Having said all that, if you haven't already procured the trans, might want to consider an overdrive trans to reduce highway rpm and maybe gain a few mpg - now would be the time to do it. All budget dependent, of course, but just a consideration.

Re: Engine and trans

Yeah I was thinking of using a 700r4 out of an s10 but wasn't sure if it paired up as well as the th350. From the information I was reading their are several different 700's. I wasn't exactly sure which one I would need for my specific application. Whether it was the short or long shaft, or which bellhousing I would need. Again, when it comes to transmissions, rear ends, and gear ratios I get lost.

Re: Engine and trans

If you have the more common 3.73 ratio an overdrive transmission would be worth the extra effort.

Re: Engine and trans

No doubt it is nice and warm down there in Georgia so easy to do this. If you jack up one wheel and count the driveshaft turns to make two wheel revolutions, you will have the ratio.

Re: Engine and trans

I have had trucks both ways and I would put a 700R4 in it. Have it gone through before putting it in. Have the trans shop do the upgrades that they need. If you get something from an S10 make sure it had a 4.3 in it. Tail shaft will not have an effect since you are going to shorten the frame and will need a new drive shaft anyway. Doing the swap while you have the body off the frame will make life easy. All the rivets for the old trans crossmember will be easy to get to. You can get a bolt in trans crossmember from several vendors.

Re: Engine and trans

Thanks guys. Yeah it's a frame off resto and I currently have a bare frame. I'm just wondering if I'm getting in over my head. This is my first frame off resto and first c10. So PGSigns, it can't be any old s10 700r4? I need to get it from the 4.3 and if I do will I still need the necessary upgrade?

Use this link

http://tri-5.chevyrides.com/rpm.php

You can punch in all you info and see how it effects your rpm, mph, trans, tire etc. I agree with everything above, and although the 350/350 combo is tried & true(& usually cheap) I wouldn't waste the time or money. If you just drive in town or weekends you might be happy but if you plan on cruising over 60mph just get an overdrive and you won't be sorry. The installation is no more difficult than a th350. I have a 350/NV3500(5spd manual) in my 66 C20 with stock 4:56 rear and 31" tires and 80mph is no problem at 2600rpm. In my 58 I have a 350/700R4 and 235/75/25 (27") tires, a stock 3:90 rear and again it purrs along at 80. I drive mine anywhere and everywhere with confidence and decent gas mileage considering. Just do your research, some 700r's are better than others, but I believe you can build them all to be good. You want the 30 spline version. Do it right the first time. That being said, it's your truck and you know how it will be driven so do what works for you. Just my ¢.02.

Re: Engine and trans

Thanks for the reply and website Nail, it's very useful. As for the trans, I'm going to take everyone's advice and go with the overdrive. But again, when it comes to transmission, I have no knowledge. This guy here is selling a 94 700r4 out of a chevy 1500, He said he would take $275. Is that the trans I'm looking for and is it a good price? It's going to be paired up with a 350 sbc. https://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/pts/6029838785.html

Re: Engine and trans

I could be wrong but I think that year is computer controlled. I think you want 82-92 & I want to say 87 & up is the better one, but don't quote me on that. See if you can find a shop that sells rebuilt ones so you know it will be a good one. I paid 750$ for a rebuilt with a shift kit.

Re: Engine and trans

Yeah I understand buying a rebuilt but I'm trying to limit my budget. If I can get one that will fit a 350 (plug and play) then I'll deal with it until it blows. Then if I have to, rebuild it.

Re: Engine and trans

I totally get it, both of my trucks are built on side job money, recycling etc. My wife is cool with my addiction as long as it doesn't effect our household budget research 700r4's and see the years to look for. They bolt right up to a SBC. I'm sure you can find a good used one, some of the wrecking yards out here test them, check em over then sell them.

Re: Engine and trans

For starters, there is conflicting info in that craigslist ad. The title says '94 but his description says '95. Either way, both of those years will be a 4L60E, which is computer controlled. You will need an aftermarket standalone controller for that trans. Those are about $600. Plus you will also need a TPS for your carb. That is another $125-150. That is a better setup in my opinion, but it is a bit more money.

Re: Engine and trans

Yeah I saw the conflict on the ad. I messaged the person and they stated it was out of a 94 chevy 1500 which I also thought was the 4L60E. I asked him about that but he stated it was a 700r4. So the conflict and the fact that he's telling me it's a 700 out of that year make model makes me skeptical

All you need is a couple of pictures. That will tell the tale.

Re: Engine and trans

I would still want to know my rear axle ratio prior to making a final decision on a transmission. It's true that a 3.73 is the most likely, but what if it's something else. A 3.08 for instance might turn out to be less than ideal for a 700R4. Edit: BTW, I personally love a 350/350 combo with a 3.08. A straightforward economical setup for all around driving.
