Power Steering Gear --Close ratio ?

The original power steering gear box was leaking and the draglink (one-piece OEM) was shot, so I had the draglink changed out for a new 3-piece adjustable unit and also swapped in a steering gear box that once was on my suburban. The swap went OK, but the new steering gear turns a LOT faster, and maybe won't cut as far over. One twitch and you're in the ditch.
Subject is a '71 GMC Jimmy 4wd [K1500 (k/5)], w/350 V8, SM465/np205, PS, PB. Do I have the wrong gearbox for a 4WD?
Once you get used to it, it's better on the freeway, but what about on the trail?
