Axle swap.

I've a 1969 c10 6 lug rear end with 3:73 gears which I believe is an open carrier according to the stamping on the axle tube information I obtained from this site.

Is it possible to switch out the axles on this rear end over to 5 lug axles so I can get it to match my '72's front 5 lugs suspension? If this is a possibility there are trucks from other years I could use the 5 lug axles from or do I have to buy new ones. Also, if I can swap them, will the 6 lug backing plates match the 5 lug drums or is it time to buy a disc rear brake setup. I mean if I have to go through that amount of work, I may as well upgrade the brakes.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Axle swap.

You must use conversion axles that are a shorter length, or have your stockers redrilled for 5 lug.

I pulled the backing plates off of my open diff 1972 housing and directly bolted them on a 1969 housing that has 3.73 gears and posi-traction unit. Did the same as you so I could match the 5 lug front disc setup. Didn't remove the cylinders, shoes or any of the hardware. They bolted right on. I then slid Moser 5 lug conversion axles into the 1969 housing. Been running that for 2 years now.

Re: Axle swap.

Jegs has Yukon 5 lug conversion axle kit for 160$ .... Use promo code SAVENOW for 20$ and it's only 140$ .... Great deal .... Comes with drums , studs and bearings too ! ... It's for 65-69 c10s ... So you can have 5 lugs and the narrower housing to run a wider tire ... Win win

Re: Axle swap.

Thanks to the both of you, just a single axle is approximately $120 depending who is offering them. That sounds like a great deal so I'm going to order the set today, again, thanks guys.

Re: Axle swap.

I think I did this right .... If the link doesn't work just go to jegs and search Yukon axle conversion .... Add to cart and enter promo SAVENOW

Re: Axle swap.

Wow, that Jeg's deal sounds too good to be true....LOL

Moser was, (not sure, it's been a while, if they still do) selling "C" clip axles for $260.00/pair. A friend of mine's son bought a set for his 67 C10 (had them made for 5 lug conversion). Of course this is axles only...

Re: Axle swap.

Did any of you guys order this from Jegs and receive it yet? Does it have everything pictured?

The link above doesn't work anymore, except I still have it in my Jeg's cart at the lower price and it looks like I can order it...

Re: Axle swap.

No ... 72timemachine ordered also ... He was inquiring about a time frame for the order and found out it was only one side ... I guess jegs figured out the advertisement was misleading and took it down ... So the price is for one side only ... The have a new listing up now that is correct ... I just cancelled my order
