What went on here?

These holes are on both sides of the fleetside box at the front only. There's no staining on the outside or the inside to show a contour of some kind of bracket. There were remnants of a wooden stake that could possibly have been bolted through the 3/8" hole in the center of the four others.

This large hole was as I was told , an auxiliary fuel tank that was in the box. How could I cover this up?

Four of these type of holes from I believe tie down hooks. Looking for hooks to fill these.

Last but not least , on both sides , these clearance lights. Going to use some reflectors I have from another project to cover these up.

Re: What went on here?

Ditto on the weld it up point, but also depends on whether you're wanting to keep the original patina look or are planning to repaint. Keeping it original paint otherwise would be challenging if you weld the filler hole shut. Could be painted to kinda sorta match though. Another option is a dummy chrome (or rusted) or painted filler neck cap with a boxed neck cover inside the bed (like a 69-72 NL2 RPO). Just gotta remember to not fill er up

As for pic 1, my first thought was a horizontal camper shock, but I don't think that's correct because there's no pass-thru at the front of the bed sheetmetal. So, hmm, dunno.

That's the thing. Not painting this one. Staying with what's left of original paint.

Re: What went on here?

I think I have hooks- get me a measurement of the holes center to center and I will see if they are the same. I have these in the pic, and I also have a different style I pulled off a 61 gmc bed-finding those might take some doing , but I have them somewhere.

Have you ever heard of blending solvent? Works pretty good, or touch up paint.

Re: What went on here?

In my humble opinion, the filler neck hole needs to be welded in. This is a case of "it is what it is" and there's no getting around it. A competent welder could keep the repair area fairly small, and a little spot painting would look tons better than the gaping maw that is there now. If desired, some careful faux patina might help the repair be less obvious.

Looks like the consensus wins the vote. Maybe a decal to hide the work done afterwards. I want to do a shop look truck on this one with United Delco and AC.

I'll admit that I have used this method for hiding small damage before.
A sticker in that particular location might seem kinda random, but it would mask the repair.

Re: What went on here?

On that truck, since you aren't going to repaint it, and it's going to have blemishes, other "character" marks, dings, and additions... maybe just get a piece of THIN diamond plate, or some plain aluminum, and pop rivet it over the hole and leave it alone. It'll "patina" to the rest of the truck soon enough, and it'll look like just another addition from a previous owner.
Shame it's so high--you could make it a mount for a 10-foot whip antenna!
